Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” Season 4 opens new chapters for all the characters including Vishwakumar matriarch Nirmala (Ranjita Chakraborty) when she marries her new love Len (Jeff Garlin).
Nirmala’s wedding ceremony provides the final scene where everyone – Devi’s family and friends – comes together before the show ends. The scene meant a lot for Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Nalini, Nirmala’s daughter-in-law and Devi’s mother.
“I just remember so many people wrapped up that day, so it was very intense, very emotional. Yes. The wedding scene is very symbolic of the show. This is something that happened to Mindy’s father. Mindy’s father remarried later in life. It’s something that happened to my mother at the age of 64 and it’s a story that’s unexpected,” Jagannathan told TheWrap, which co-star Richa Moorjani said is rare for South Asian characters. “It’s permission to never close a chapter of your life, to keep it always open, to keep that narrative always open. For women in a multi-generational household, I think it’s a There is a theme that keeps coming up – our stories never end. There is opportunity to find love and healing.
The wedding also calls back to the foundations of South Asian culture on which the show was founded, including a traditional dance of Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her cousin Kamala (Moorjani), choreographed by Zoya Kazi.
“That dance sequence was something that both Maitreya was trying to reveal because I’ve always wanted to do a dance scene in the show, I thought it would be so great for the show, because dance and music and art are Indian. Such a huge part of the culture,” Moorjani said. “And when we go to Indian weddings, we have a lot of performances, and it’s kind of a celebration of who we are. That whole scene felt like a celebration, not only of the wedding but of the last four years and for us.” Was.
Moorjani also considered the effect of his character on Devi and vice versa.
“We’ve seen a huge development in the relationship between Devi and Kamala since season one – they both didn’t hate each other, but Devi hated Kamala,” she said. “And now they really are like sisters. Devi has helped Kamala overcome her anger and stand up for herself, and Devi has perhaps calmed down a bit because of Kamala.

Jagannathan praised Devi’s courage in every walk of life.
“The Goddess has taught all of us how to be really brave, how to take risks, how to fall on your face, never to accept the right answer. Kamala Harris has this quote which goes like ‘I eat breakfast. Nahi khata’ and that too for the goddess,” she said. “She won’t accept. The One I Love, we finally understand that Devi gets her sexuality from her grandmother. We draw that line at the end, you say ‘Oh, it’s in the genes.’ It sounds like a very funny story, but I love that the show explores female empowerment as well as female sexuality.
Moorjani said that the show “explores female anger with these brown characters that we never get to see.”
“My favorite part of playing Kamla is playing a character where I get to bring out my true self. It’s the first time I’ve been on a set where I feel like I’m allowed to be brown,” she said. “I love having a character with a brown name and eating with my hands and taking my shoes off in the house. Allowed, all those things. That’s the thing I’ll miss the most, because we don’t know if we’ll ever get that opportunity or not. I hope we do.

After Murajani indicated that she would miss her bond with Jagannathan, Jagannathan echoed the sentiment, saying that their partnership made it feel like they were in high school with the other characters.
“I will miss Nalini’s sense of humour. I think it’s so weird and so special, and I’ll miss being on a set where, for the first time in my career, I really, really belonged and wanted and never felt like a guest. , and my voice my voice mattered,” she said. “I know it matters on every set, but we were so lucky that it happened on this set. And also the feeling of family that the show gave to its viewers, it gives to us as well. We feel like a family. We grow up as a family, we fight as a family. It’s beautiful.”
