Review by: Shivani Bansali
Aamir Khan is back on the big screen after a long 4 years and his last film, Criminals of Hindustanended up being one of the biggest flops of his career, so the responsibility rests entirely with him both as a lead actor and producer of the rest of the cast and director Advait Chandan deliver and deliver big. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Laal Singh Chaddha will pay off a lot, not because it’s a remake of Tom Hanks masterpiece Forrest Gump or because of irritating the Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha trend or even because of exorbitant ticket prices, but only because the Aamir and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer fails to strike a chord apart from a few instances. What is it about

The eponymous mentally challenged man, Laal Singh Chaddha (Aamir Khan), embarks on an incredible journey, being part of and somewhat influential in several key moments in Indian history, discovering amazing new facets about himself along the way. what’s hot

To Laal Singh Chaddha’s credit, Laal Singh Chaddha is not a page-by-page remake of Forrest Gump and to the credit of writer Atul Kulkarni, he has managed to cleverly provide the script with important keynotes in Indian history such as part of Laal’s journey. The journey itself is inspiring in some places and emotional in others. More importantly, the actors convey these emotions well with Kareena Kapoor and Mona Singh even rising above the script and Naga Chaitanya making a fist of his role. When he comes to Aamir Khan, it’s in the second half where he really shines. Satyajit Pande’s camera work is beautiful, as are the production values. The highlight, however, is Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo.

What not

Laal Singh Chaddha is just too long, boring in places and exhausting to finish as the end approaches, but never seems to reach. In fact, editor Hemanti Sarkar has to be questioned about how he cut the overall film, none of the songs work (what happened to Pritam) and even the background score leaves no trace. Aamir Khan also surprisingly exaggerates his act in the first half, especially when he plays the younger version of Laal. The big highlights and strong emotional punch are unfortunately missing throughout the film.

BL verdict

Laal Singh Chaddha is a movie that needed a much better emotional resonance, a much higher inspirational high and a much better act from the lead actor, Aamir Khan. All these things are there, but in short order. BollywoodLife goes with 2 out of 5 stars.
