“The Bachelorette” Season 19’s Erich Schwer apologized for a yearbook photo wearing blackface that circulated on the Internet.
The 29-year-old contestant hopes to secure the final rose from Gabby Windy. He and Windy went on a fantasy suite date on Monday, before he became the last man for their love. In the days after a viral Reddit post that included a traditional yearbook picture as well as a photo of Schwer black face As well as an Afro wig came to the fore – which featured questions and criticism.
Schwer apologized on Instagram on Thursday, acknowledging the “insensitive” photos and “offensive and harmful” behavior.
“I sincerely apologize for the insensitive photo of me in blackface from my high school yearbook,” he wrote.
A representative for “The Bachelorette” did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
“I was gullible for the harmful effects of my actions on the black community and those closest to me, and will always regret my aggressive and harmful behavior,” he continued. “I am deeply ashamed of my actions and understand that my apology is the first step in taking accountability.”
The apology received a mixed response from fans, with some supporting the way Schwar acknowledged the incident and apologized while taking accountability. Others completely abandon the contestant’s support and her relationship with Gabby.
Schwer won over Gabby, among others, with their recent hometown date, during which fans were introduced to her father, Alan, who was battling cancer. The diagnosis came years before Allen had been beaten to death three times, according to his son. Allen died at the age of 65 on July 6, five days before the season 19 premiere.
Season 19 of “The Bachelorette” ends Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC in the finale.
