“From Scratch,” the new Netflix limited series starring Zoe Saldana and Eugenio Mastrandria, debuted its first trailer on Thursday.
Inspired by the New York Times bestselling memoir “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home” by Tembie Locke, the adaptation’s eight-hour-long episode will premiere on the streamer on October 21.
“We have a saying in Italy,” Mastandria’s voice flashes over the opening sequence of Zoe Saldana’s character studying abroad in Italy. “In dreams, as in love, everything is possible.”
Amhle ‘Amy’ Wheeler (Saldana) centers on “from scratch” as she leaves her Texas hometown for college, and then the United States entirely for a semester studying abroad in Italy. Although she plans to go to law school after undergraduate, those plans change when she bumps into a truly handsome Sicilian chef, Lino (Mastraandria).
In addition to Saldana and Mastrandria, the cast includes Danielle Deadweiler, Keith David, Judith Scott, Kelita Smith, Lucia Sardo, Parade Benassai and Roberta Rigano.
“I came here to experience the art,” says Amy of Saldana. “I can never get in my life to try things again.”
Lino asks Amy to cook for her at his restaurant. He expresses himself through food. This chance encounter very soon turns into love for the first time.
“I think we can be something great,” Lino tells Amy—and they become it.
The cross-cultural love story that unfolds does not come without its challenges, however, as Lino moves in with Amy and struggles to adapt to America, cooking for people instead of waiting tables at a restaurant. Doesn’t want anything else.
Later in the trailer as more time passes, Lino is shown moving through a cancer screening machine, followed by her and Amy’s wedding day, their children supporting them in the wake of Lino’s illness. A montage of family highlights. ,
“Love is friendship; heartache; support; family; joy; pain; beauty,” the text reads in the middle of Amy’s emotional scenes that bring the news to her family, her family supporting them, and the couple coming to the hospital together. are lying on the bed.
Sisters Temby and Attika Locke co-produced the series. They include executive producers, Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Richard Abbett, Jermaine Johnson, Will Robotham and Saldana. The Reese’s Book Club selected Temby Locke’s memoir as its monthly pick in May 2019.
“Italians love a good love story,” Saldana says at the end of the trailer. “And ours is for the ages.”
