Steve Martin clarifies his retirement comments: ‘It’s a bit of an exaggeration’

Steve Martin is one of the most famous and beloved actors to ever reach the pinnacle of Hollywood success. Martin starred in numerous films and TV shows over his five-decade career, including: The Acorn, Pink Panther, Cheaper per dozenand Bride’s Father. Most recently he played in Only murders in the building alongside frequent collaborator Martin Short and Selena Gomez. In addition, in 2014 Martin received an honorary award at the Academy Awards in recognition of his extraordinary talents and the unique inspiration he brought to the cinema.


Reports surfaced last month suggesting Martin would retire after the end of this year Only murders in the building; however, the actor clarifies his earlier statement to People while walking the red carpet of the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards. “It’s a bit of an exaggeration,” Martin said of his retirement. “They asked me, ‘Are you thinking about your retirement?’ I said, “Well, this is it. I’m doing a TV show, a book is coming out, and I’m touring with [Short]. That’s my pension – that’s what it’s going to look like.'”

During his first interview with The Hollywood ReporterMartin clarified that the reason for stepping out of the limelight and bigger projects is his family life.

“I have a family life that is very nice.” He continues: “To film a movie now, to live somewhere else, I don’t want to do that anymore. I can’t disappear for three months.” Martin says if anything, he’ll take a little less work. “My wife [Anne Stringfield] always says: ‘You always say you’re retiring and then you always come up with something.’ I’m not really interested in retiring. I am not. But I would just work a little less. Could be.”

Martin Short wants his co-star to stick around

Martin Short and Steve Martin are a couple that always goes well together, as evidenced by their frequent collaborations with each other. Their first project came with Three Amigos! in 1985, before rejoining Bride’s Father and Bride’s Father Part II in 1995. In addition, they performed voice work together in the 1998 animated film The Prince of Egypt.

Martin and Short starred in the 2018 Netflix comedy special, An evening you will forget for the rest of your life who received four Emmy nominations. In 2021 the duo reunited for Only murders in the building, which has just concluded its second season. Short tells People: “I can’t imagine ever retiring. I hope not, because then you know what’s happening to me,” while jokingly crosses his neck with his finger.

Fans can see more of Steve Martin and Martin Short when Only murders in the building Season 3 will arrive on Hulu sometime in late 2023 or early 2024.
