Even with the massive popularity that SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Vivek Agnihotris The Kashmir Files enjoyed; both films were rejected as India’s official entry for the 95e Academy Awards 2022. From industry people to craftsmen, everyone was convinced that India will be represented by one of these films. It turns out that the official roster is different from the predictions. This year, the film federation chose the Gujarati film, Chhello show (last movie show).
Gujarati film Chhello Show is India’s official entry for the Oscars 2022; RRR and The Kashmir Files Rejected
The announcement was made on Tuesday. The film stars Bhavin Rabari, Vikas Bata, Richa Meena, Bhavesh Shrimali, Dipen Raval and Rahul Koli. The story is set against the backdrop of cinemas in India witnessing a massive transition from celluloid to digital, where hundreds of single-screen cinemas have fallen into disrepair or disappeared altogether. The film will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021. It also won the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid International Film Festival in 2021.
Director Pan Nalin says, “I never imagined that such a day would come and bring light and bring a celebration of light. Chhello Show enjoys love from all over the world, but I felt pain in my heart, how can I make India discover this “Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens! Thank you FFI, thank you Jury.”
Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur said: “We are delighted and honored that our film, Last Film Show, has been selected to represent India at the Academy Awards. There is no more appropriate time for a film like this, which celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema and the theatrical experience. When cinema visits around the world are disrupted by a pandemic, it once again reminds audiences of the first time they fell in love with the experience of watching a movie in a darkened cinema hall. It is a matter of great pride for us to represent our country with this film, and with the support of our partners Samuel Goldwyn Films and Orange Studio, we will ensure that we do our best at the Academy Awards!”
Samuel Goldwyn Films and Orange Studio act as international distributors for the US and European markets respectively. Meanwhile, the legendary Shochiku Studios acts as the Japanese distributor, while the esteemed Medusa de Latest movie show (Chhello Show) to Italian cinemas.
Having won the hearts of critics and audiences around the world, the Gujarati-language coming-of-age drama will be released in theaters in Gujarat and select screens across India on October 14, 2022. The film is produced by Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Motion Pictures, Monsoon Films, Chhello Show LLP and Marc Duale.
The committee, which was headed by Kannada director TS Nagabharana, met in Chennai a few days ago to review the submissions. According to reports, among the participants there were SS Rajamouli’s RRRVivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir FilesSajimon Prabhakar’s Malayankunju and Rahul Sankrityan’s Shyam Singha Roy.
In 2021, the Tamil movie Koozhangal (Pebbles), which was supervised by filmmaker Vinothraj PS, was India’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category. However, the film was not shortlisted. Indian documentary film writing with fire, directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, it was officially nominated at the 94th Academy Awards 2021. Sadly, the documentary didn’t win and lost Summer of the soul.
So far, the last Indian film to make the top five in the Best International Feature Film category was: Mother India (1958), Salaam Bombay (1989) and Lagaan (2001).
