While procedural dramas – dramas that formulate and close a story with each episode based on season-long arcs – are consistently the most in demand, they largely still originate from linear channels. . The streaming platform has either not cracked the code for a successful streaming original procedural drama yet or is fully content to be home to a second life of procedural drama from linear channels.
And as a more established genre, procedural plays haven’t seen the explosive growth that some of the other trending genres have seen recently. With many long-standing franchises from network TV accounting for the bulk of demand for the genre, demand has remained largely steady and predictable. In the first week of September 2022, the overall demand for the genre was only 8% higher than in January 2020. Compare this with some of the fastest growing styles such as true Crime The growth in demand for which has been hyper-charged by streaming platforms chasing the trend and churning out original content.
Last month was the most sought-after procedural drama in the United States”Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, which had 25.15 times the average chain demand for the month.
It also entered the original “Top 10”.law & Order”, which NBC revived for its 21st season this year, after ending in 2010. It will return for its 22nd season later this month, notably a testament to the “Law & Order” franchise’s longevity and procedural style.
The dominance of linear channels in the procedural drama genre becomes very clear when we look at how the demand for the genre is broken down by the parent platform/network. CBS is the clear leader in this space as last month 30.7% of all procedural dramas in the US were in demand for a show that originally aired on CBS. NBC is in second place with a respectable share of 21.6% in demand for this genre. Shows from these two networks alone account for over 50% of the demand for procedural dramas in the US.
No other platform comes close to matching the share of CBS or NBC and the remaining platforms each have less than 10% of the month’s demand. Netflix was unique as the only streaming platform with a significant portion of the demand for its original procedural dramas, largely thanks to the success of Lucifer. While Linear Network’s content continues to dominate the genre, these shows often have a successful second life on streaming platforms, for example “criminal mindappears regularly in the top shows on Netflix. It remains to be seen whether a truly original (not just acquired) procedural drama from the streaming platform can shake the genre and potentially the top tier for this type of content. may increase demand.
