Will Smith will produce and likely star in Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s narrative directorial debut brilliance from Paramount Pictures.
Will Smith to produce adaptation of Marcus Sakey’s novel Brilliance; in conversation to play in the movie
The film has been described as a “passionate project” for Will and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman – who has collaborated with the actor on films such as Me, robot, I’m a legend and Hancock. Smith produces through his company Westbrook Studios with Jon Mone and Ryan Shimazaki. Screenwriter Goldsman and Greg Lessans produce through Weed Road Pictures, along with Shane Salerno through The Story Factory and James Lassiter.
Author Marcus Sackey, who published the . wrote brilliance novel, also acts as co-producer. Sackey also wrote follow-up novels A better world and Written in fire. A report from Deadline describes the premise as: “If 1% of the world’s children were born with powerful gifts, how would society adapt to them? The Brilliance novel trilogy is set in a future where non-neurotypical people – demonized by society as ‘twists’ or ‘abnorms’ – threaten the status quo of the ‘normal’ population with their unique gifts.”
“They are officially labeled “Brilliants” and are closely monitored by the government. The plan is for Smith to play the book series hero Nick Cooper, a federal agent who works for the Department of Analysis and Response. His job is to track down and end criminal abnormals who use their gifts for illness. The agent is an abnormal himself, with a gift for predictive analytics that allows him to see what will happen before it happens and react preemptively.”
“He is also the father of a Brilliant daughter. While infiltrating a radical group of Brilliant who intend to provoke civil war, he uses his own abilities against his Brilliant enemies, such as a hit man who senses time faster than his opponents. When Cooper is tasked with tracking down John Smith – the country’s most elusive and dangerous anomalous – everything Cooper believes in will be questioned. One of the abnormals he’s chasing tells him, “You can’t stop the future. All you can do is pick a side.”
