It has been given the NC-17 rating for “some graphic violence and sexual content.” While an NC-17 rating isn’t always the death knell for a movie, as is the case with Marilyn Monroe’s biopic blond heading to Netflix where that doesn’t really matter, it could be a problem for other movies with planned theatrical releases. NEON has formally appealed that NC-17 rating, so this could eventually be reduced to an R rating before release, although this may include some footage of infinity pool be clipped.

Blonde is stuck with his NC-17 rating

In case of blond, the NC-17 rating of the Marilyn Monroe biopic has not been invoked. Director Andrew Dominik has not apologized for the rating, as he felt he wanted to include the spicier scenes in the film as a way of staying honest about Monroe’s true story, regardless of the rating that triggered it.

“It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe,” said Dominik, via ScreenDaily. “It’s kind of what you want, isn’t it? I want to go see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story. It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f—- -g problem of the public. It is not running for public office.”

For her part, star Ana de Armas thought the NC-17 rating wasn’t even justified blond. She told THR after the movie got its rating that she’s seen other movies and shows with more explicit content that have been rated R, so she doesn’t quite understand.

“I can tell you some shows or movies that are much more explicit with much more sexual content than… blond‘, she said. “But in order to tell this story, it’s important to show all these moments in Marilyn’s life that made her end up the way she did. It had to be explained. Everybody [in the cast] knew we had to go to awkward places. I was not alone.”
