Jeff Garlin Announces Bipolar Disorder After The Goldbergs Kill His Character

The Goldbergs kicked off its tenth season on Wednesday with one big change as the star of the series Jeff Garlin is no longer part of the show. In response to allegations of inappropriate and unprofessional behavior behind the scenes, it was announced that Garlin was leaving The Goldbergs. It was later revealed that his character would be killed off in Season 10, so fans knew that Garlin would be absent from the new episodes.

In the season 10 premiere, it is explained by Patton Oswalt who narrates as the adult Adam Goldberg that Garlin’s character, Adam’s father Murray, had died between seasons. No specific reason has been given for the character’s death, as it is only noted that Murray passed away suddenly a few months before Season 10 begins. The show honors Murray by putting a spotlight on his favorite seat before it is later converted into a glider for his surviving daughter, Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and her baby; she was revealed to be pregnant at the end of season 9.

“That year there was one change that made everything stop,” Patton’s Adam Goldberg says in the story. “Just a few months ago, out of nowhere, we lost my father. We will always love you, father. Always. And we will find a way to move forward together. Because we’re the Goldbergs, after all.’

He also said: “It turns out that the people we say goodbye to never really leave us. But that doesn’t mean we don’t miss them.”

Jeff Garlin Says He’s Bipolar

Jeff Garlin seemed to be responding indirectly to his character being killed in the season premiere of The Goldbergs. He doesn’t specifically refer to the show, but in a new social media post, he reveals for the first time that he struggles with bipolar disorder. While it’s not entirely clear, given the timing, it’s possible that Garlin is suggesting that the issues he had with some of his colleagues on the show’s set are related to his diagnosis.

take to InstagramGarlin posted an image of Stafford Repp as Police Chief O’Hara in the original Batman series. In the photo, Repp is reading an issue of MAD Magazine spoofing Batman. Garlin writes a message in the caption announcing that he is struggling with bipolar but that he is doing his best to overcome it.

“Bipolar is an asshole,” Garlin said. “Sometimes it’s just too much to handle. I’m doing my best. This is the first time I’ve been candid about this.”
