An anime game adaptation well done

Several attempts have often been criticized for deviating too much from the source material. In many cases, they failed to understand what made the original material so appealing in the first place. However, Netflix has begun to turn things around. After the success of Arcane: League of LegendsNetflix premiered the animated series Cyberpunk: Edge Runnerswhich was widely acclaimed.

Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is designed to expand on the universe created by Mike Pondsmith. It introduced new characters and told a new story set in the world of the 2020 video game, Cyberpunk 2077. Although some were skeptical about that edge runners turned out to be a success, they were soon proved wrong. This is why Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is an anime game adaptation well done.

Portraying the ugliness and beauty of Night City

Night City has always been at the heart of the cyberpunk franchise, a futuristic city on the west coast of California. Though it was called the “City of Dreams,” it was also voted the worst place to live in America in the universe. On the one hand, Night City featured stunning architecture and incredibly advanced technology. On the other hand, the city was overrun with greed, corruption and violence. Citizens accepted that companies ruled their city and that the companies always competed for power.

Life revolved around survival, consumerism and an endless climb up the corporate ladder. Both Johnny Silverhand of Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077 and Lucy in Cyberpunk: Edge Runners dreamed of leaving the city, knowing it was not a good place for people to live. For all the ugliness of Night City, it did provide an environment where people could form deep friendships, fall in love, and overcome major obstacles with the people closest to them. The series perfectly portrayed both the horrific aspects and the redeeming qualities of life in Night City. There was still some light in the darkness.

Real Consequences

During the 10-episode run, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners consistently put his characters at risk. Night City was already dangerous enough for ordinary citizens, but edgerunners were placed in even more stressful environments. The series managed to find a way to make viewers worry about the main characters. What kind of plot armor the characters of Cyberpunk: Edge Runners had, Studio Trigger made sure it didn’t take the tension away. There were consequences to the characters’ actions, and the characters didn’t always emerge victorious from their missions.

Strong character development

David Martinez, the main character of Cyberpunk: Edge Runners, started as a student at the prestigious Arasaka Academy. He didn’t fit in with the other students, he was shunned and bullied just because he came from a poor family. Not having a dream of his own, David worked to fulfill his mother’s dream of rising through the ranks and one day reaching the top floor of the Arasaka Tower. Things didn’t go exactly as planned, and David ended up becoming an edgerunner, otherwise known as a “cyberpunk.” Throughout the series, David Martinez grew tremendously and eventually found his purpose in Night City.

The world presented in cyberpunk was one in which people were obsessed with body modification through the use of cybernetic implants. “Cyberware” was commonplace and often necessary, but it also involved major risks. Too much cybernetic augmentation can cause ‘cyberpsychosis’, a condition that makes people lose control of themselves. Cyberpunk: Edge Runners has explored this in depth, looking at the over-reliance on technology and how that affected the characters. The series also excelled at balancing high stakes with a relatively small-scale story.

From Maine to Rebecca, Studio Trigger surrounded their protagonist with a great cast of characters. Each character had their own distinct personality and had a clear purpose in the series. It was quite remarkable what Studio Trigger was able to achieve with supporting characters, such as edge runners was still a story focused on David. None of the characters were there just to be there as they all took the series to its emotional finale.
