As the January 6 committee hearings resume soon, more Trump aides will continue to be summoned. But at this point, Seth Meyers is not convinced that Trump himself should be one of the testimonies. On Wednesday night’s “Late Night,” the host likened the situation to literally putting a monkey on a stage.
To kick off his “A Closer Look” segment, Meyers reported that the ninth hearing this week was delayed because Hurricane Ian was hitting Florida. According to Meyers, the delay gave the committee more time to decide whether they wanted to subpoena Mike Pence or Trump himself. But Meyers has some objections to that idea.
“I have to be honest, if I were on the committee, I’m not sure where I would land on the question of whether to subpoena Trump,” he said. “I mean, on the one hand, it would be great to have her sworn in on camera, so that you can have her answer questions in front of the American public under threat of perjury. On the other hand, she doesn’t answer questions under threat of perjury.” the giver.”
Meyers got a little more blunt. “Putting Trump on the stands is as good an idea as putting a chimpanzee at a school game. He won’t stick to the script,” he joked.
To support his argument, Meyers pulled footage of an interview he recently conducted with Sean Hannity of the twice-impeached former president, in which he went on a “deranged tangent” – claiming that Protesters wanted to “rip” the Lincoln Memorial. And in New York people “go into stores with axes and they start hurling axes at people.”
“Did he accidentally watch ‘House of Dragons’ and think it was news?” Meyers joked, before once again making the impression of Trump. “‘Have you seen what’s happening in New York City? Joking aside – in a way – Meyers said that if Trump is allowed to testify, given his record in interviews, it will take a long time to get through.
