When will Grand Admiral Thrawn make his live-action Star Wars debut?

Originally, Thrawn appeared in a series of novels in the 1990s, serving as an enemy to major characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, but Thrawn continued to gain popularity when he appeared in the animated series. Star Wars Rebels. Fans expected to see him in live-action form after the character was mentioned by Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) in The Mandalorianbut as of now it is unclear when the character will appear and who could play him but there have been several rumors over the years.

The animated version of the character is voiced by Lars Mikkelsen. That has led to some rumors that the actor will also play the live-action Thrawn. In the meantime, Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch is another actor whose name has been linked to the role in the rumor mill. Speculation about his potential casting even made its way to Cumberbatch himself, who told Collider in 2021 that he wasn’t too familiar with the character, nor did he want to hide from a role at the time.

“That’s an outright no from me, right now. I definitely don’t want to go blue,” Cumberbatch said. “I made the sky blue very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my kids and I think I’m sitting in a makeup chair and getting painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it at the end of the day maybe just…it’s not the right time in my life for that.”

It seems inevitable that Thrawn will show up in live-action sooner or later, but it remains to be seen who gets that role. For now, many fans are continuing their campaign for Christian Bale.
