After the debut of the recent episode of House of the Dragon, fans were outraged by scenes that were visually too dark to see the details in the dimmed episode.
House of the Dragon: Viewers infuriated by ‘too dark to see’ scenes in the final episode 7; HBO defends them as ‘deliberate creative decision’
As Variety notes, thrones caused a similar reaction during the last season, especially for the dimly lit battle episode The Long Night. Both that episode and episode 7 of House of the Dragon were directed by Emmy winner Miguel Sapochnik.
While many fans took to Twitter to express their outrage at the dim scenes, one Twitter user wrote, “I need @hbomax to issue a written apology for literally an entire black screen episode of #HouseOfTheDragon.” In response, one of HBO’s social media accounts went public, defending the dark scenes in the episode as “a deliberate creative decision.”

Sapochnik faced similar backlash during Game of Thrones for a dimly lit battle scene in the episode The Long Night. “It made sense that this was humanity’s last hope, the last beacon of light, and from the perspective of where we had the story to go – and that was reaching a surreal, chaotic climax – we needed an environment that was friendly was for that,” Sapochnik told Indie Wire at the time.
