“We haven’t seen that on a large scale yet, where there’s a young black woman who’s a princess, and she’s also a scientist,” Wright explains. “I feel proud when a young woman comes up to me and says, ‘Hey, you made me feel smart in school, and you made me feel like I can sit next to a man in technology, and I feel strong.’ That changed my life forever.”

Of course, a major Marvel role will be life-changing, as the audience she reaches will be bigger than ever with the upcoming sequel. During her conversation with EW, Wright discussed her injury and how director Ryan Coogler helped her through the entire process.

“It was an unfortunate situation that held me back a bit, but at the time I was surrounded by family and friends,” Wright says. “Ryan, he was incredibly supportive. And it was a moment for me to take courage that I never had before and that I didn’t know I had.” She continues, “You know when you go through situations, and you think, ‘I didn’t know I had that much strength in me until I went through them’? That was my experience. I got the healing I needed, and I went back on set, and I was determined not to let that limit me,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, what if I can’t do the things I’m used to doing?’ But by God’s grace, I got through it and came back stronger.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Tenoch Huerta, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira and Winston Duke alongside Wright. Fans will fill local theaters when the Ryan Coogler helmet movie hits theaters on Nov. 11.
