Colbert Grylls Pelosi Says The Dames Will Take Over The House

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” had Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as the chief guest on Monday night, and while she shared enthusiastic optimism that Democrats will “hold the house” in November’s midterm elections, Colbert in her assessment was measured more.

“Polls still aren’t necessarily reflecting what you’re saying,” he insisted, giving the speaker a bit of a take on the claim.

“We always believed we could win because we knew we had to because our democracy was on the ballot, our planet was on the ballot, women’s [rights] – Everything was on the ballot in this election compared to the regular majority coming and going,” Pelosi said.

Colbert, noting his use of the past tense for what hasn’t happened yet, jumped in: “It Is on the ballot,” he said. “If you don’t mind me pointing that out, you sound a bit like you’re talking in the past tense. We still have over a month to go. The polls still didn’t show up as necessary.” What are you saying. Do you believe in elections?”

Pelosi then clarified that she said voting was “on the past,” to indicate that “when people decided to run, and now here they are doing very well in their districts.”

Speaking further about Colbert’s concerns, she compared the midterm, now five weeks out, to horse racing that can be found in her native state of Maryland. “When you are in the lead and you are in the stretch, you whip the lead – and that is what we are doing. We are leading the way to ensure a democratic victory.”
