After a long wait, Brahmastra – starring Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt – released in theaters on September 9. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, film producer Karan Johar gave much of the credit and a pat on the back to director Ayan for successfully creating such a visual spectacle. “[Brahmastra] is an overall success for everyone involved, not just Dharma, every single member of the film. And above all I would like to say this; it’s totally an Ayan Mukerji baby and I think he really made a mark as a filmmaker because his trajectory was amazing. His first movie was wake up sid, his second movie is Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewanithird Brahmastra.”
“If you put these three films together and you don’t know the details, you never know that the same filmmaker made these three films. Karan also praised the acclaimed filmmaker who seamlessly “blended the modern world with mythology and created an entire universe; that has never happened.”
“All compliments to Ayan for creating this world that is completely original, while his inspiration may come from fantasy movies around the world, but I think this story is original. Everything about it is completely in him and born through him.” When asked what exactly gave him the confidence that he could bring this fantasy trilogy to a successful conclusion, Karan said, “Just knowing that his level of passion is one of the highest I’ve seen in a filmmaker?”
He continued: “His level of dedication, his level of doing just one thing and doing it and his academic spirit, his accepting and acknowledging good, bad, everything is, that kind of receptive spirit. I feel that everything Ayan Mukerji does will always leave a mark because it comes from a lot of work, a lot of hard work, a lot of passion, a lot of integrity and a lot of dedication.”
“Excluding myself, I’ve never seen a filmmaker work as hard as Ayan,” he added. “I don’t think in my collective career, the kind of work I’ve done, he put into this one film.”
Professionally, Karan Johar .’s next direction is Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi and is set to release in 2023. The filmmaker also plans to direct an action entertainer with hopes to start the shoot in April 2023.
