Season 19 shows a different side of Bailey

Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital is about to be injected with new life as another class of interns is introduced. But this class has a lot more on their shoulders than previous groups, as they are entering the hospital after years of scandal that cost Gray Sloan’s previously elite reputation.

While there is a sense of optimism among employees about the potential that comes from “diamonds in the rough,” there is one person approaching the new stage in Gray Sloan’s teaching program with a healthy dose of skepticism. After Meredith Gray was handed the Chief of Surgery last season, it was unclear whether Miranda Bailey would return.

But, as Chandra Wilson, who played the character for 19 seasons, says, “Bailey can’t go anywhere for very long. He’s very naughty.”

“She’s really going through the same transition that most of the world is going through right now, where your priorities change as a result of everything in the past three years, at this point,” Wilson told TheWrap.

While she was certainly tired of the many mishaps at Gray Sloan, her official reason for resigning was to spend time with her family after adopting the daughter of her husband’s deceased co-worker.

“She’s got Pru now, and everyone who’s ever watched the show and knows anything about Miranda Bailey knows she’s always wanted a little girl,” Wilson said. “She’s making sure to enjoy this moment in time because she’s really achieved every single professional goal she set out to achieve from the time she met in the pilot episode of ‘Grey’s.

Over the years, Wilson — and audiences — have come to know Miranda as a deeply caring person who has put every ounce of herself into her work. But, she’s definitely no longer as wide-eyed, tough as the main resident we met in the pilot.

Wilson teases that viewers will get to see a different side of Miranda this upcoming season, as she redefines her role in and out of the hospital.

“We have seen a man who had goals from day one; We saw him achieve those goals in real time. And we also got to see the difference between who she thinks she is and who the audience knows she is,” Wilson explained. “So I guess in Bailey’s mind, he’s still the person you met in the pilot for the most part, but as an audience member, you know better now, right? As an actor It is really exciting to see someone grow not according to my wish, but according to what has been given to me on the page.”
