Sydney Sweeney to star in Barbarella remake

The Jane Fonda classic barbarella gets the reboot treatment. The original film, released in 1968, directed by Roger Vadim, is inspired by the Jean-Claude Forest comic series. It follows Fonda as a representative of the United Earth government tasked with finding a scientist who has created a weapon capable of destroying humanity. The rumble of a sequel or reboot has persisted over the years, but none have yet come to fruition.


Now a remake of the classic movie is in the works at Sony Pictures with Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The white lotus). Per Deadline, Sweeney has teamed up with the studio for an all-new adaptation of the feature film. The reported plan is for Sweeney to take the lead role, although she will also be on board as an executive producer. This is also where the project begins, as no director or screenwriters have been appointed yet. With the recent acclaim Sydney has garnered, the restart may finally gain the traction it needs to finally get moving.

This also marks the latest casting for Sweeney on a Sony project, having recently joined the cast of the upcoming superhero feature Madame Web with Dakota Johnson. She’s also attached to Sony’s upcoming feature The registration. She is perhaps best known for her Emmy-nominated roles on the HBO shows Euphoria and The white lotusalthough she can also be seen in shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Everything sucks!and sharp objects. Sweeney’s other recent film work includes: Once upon a time in Hollywood, the voyeursand night teeth.

Rumors of Barbarella remake have been around for years

Rumors have been circulating about it for decades barbarella get a sequel. At one point in the early 1990s, there was the rumble of a new movie starring Jane Fonda’s daughter. Robert Rodriguez would later be interested in rebooting barbarella in the 2000s with Rose McGowan attached to star in the titular role. Ultimately, the project spiraled out of control when Rodriguez left due to budget concerns.

In 2012, it was reported that the brand would instead be reimagined as an Amazon Studios TV series. There were also reports of the skyfall writers taking control of the story for the reboot, which is reportedly set in Asia. Director Nicolas Winding Refn was reportedly involved, though he would later state in 2016 that he was apprehensive about restarting the property. That project would also have come to an end.

“Well, I don’t own barbarellathe estate, but I decided to be more interested in the Neon Demon”, said Refn on the Happy Sad Confused podcasting. “Besides, there are other TV things that caught my attention [because] I actually like designing it from scratch. It became…barbarellait was like Logan’s Run: certain things are better left untouched. not you need to recreate everything.”

There is no word yet on when the new barbarella with Sydney, Sweeney will start production, but when the project is finally carried out, additional information will be released shortly. Stay tuned.
