Star Wars star Ewan McGregor is the lead in the upcoming British drama series from Paramount+ and Showtime – an adaptation for the novel by Amor Towles, A gentleman in Moscow.
A Gentleman in Moscow: Obi Wan Kenobi’s Ewan McGregor as Lead for Paramount+ UK Drama Series
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in the show, produced by eOne in association with VIS, Paramount Global’s international studio unit, McGregor will play Count Alexander Rostov “who, in the wake of the Russian Revolution, discovers that his gilded past places him at the wrong side of history,” according to one plot description.
Saved from immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol, with death threats if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s limited circumstances give him access to a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.”
The series will enter production later this year and will debut in the US on Showtime and internationally on Paramount+. McGregor, who is also on board to produce the series, said: “It’s an amazing, beautiful story and I’m very excited to play such a fantastic role.” A gentleman in Moscow was written by showrunner and executive producer Ben Vanstone and Harper.
The series’ executive producers also include the novel’s author, Towles and Xavier Marchand. Prior to McGregor, veteran actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh was added to play the lead role.
