On Thursday, September 8, it was announced that the Diwali release, thank Godis fully scheduled for October 25. Surprisingly, this date falls on a Tuesday and many expected that Ajay Devgn-Sidharth Malhotra-Rakul Preet Singh’s lead actor would be released on Friday, October 21.

While several movies were released on Wednesday and Thursday, a Tuesday release is extremely rare. The last time it happened was in 2012, that also for an Ajay Devgn movie, coincidentally. His comedic antics, Son of Sardarhad arrived in theaters on Tuesday, November 13, and had clashed with Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Moreover, both movies were also Diwali releases!
In that time, Son of Sardar and jabo Tak Hai Jaan was released on the day of Diwali. Soon this trend to release a film at the Festival of Light disappeared. Instead, the makers would release the film a day after Diwali, a holiday. The logic behind this move is that generally there are fewer footsteps on Diwali day as many are engaged in Laxmi Puja.
An industry expert said: bollywood hungama“The filmmakers feared that if their film gets bad word-of-mouth on Diwali, it will prevent the audience from coming full force the next day. That is why it was decided to release the films on post Diwali day.’
In the past ten years, Diwali has released like Happy new year (2014), premium Ratan Dhan Paayo (2015), Golmaal Again (2017), Criminals of Hindustan (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021) were released a day after the festival.
Such an arrangement was not possible in 2016 and 2019 because Diwali fell on Sunday. As a result, the Diwali releases are released 4 days before post-Diwali holiday in these years. Ae Dilic Hai Mushkil and Shivaay were released on October 28, 2016 while Diwali was on Sunday, October 30. Housefull 3, made in China and saand Ki Aankh hit theaters on Friday 25 October 2019 although Diwali fell on Sunday 27 October.
The industry expert revealed: “Like Diwali day, even the pre-Diwali days are not ideal for movie business. It is the time when people are busy shopping, cleaning the house or visiting their relatives in their hometown collections from the 2016 and 2019 Diwali releases were insignificant for the first three days. Houseful 3, in fact, faced a lot of brickbats and a story was driven that it has not worked. The proliferation of collections the day after Diwali silenced everyone.”
Even Hrithik Roshan’s krish 3 went through a rough time for the first three days. The collections of the 2013 Diwali release were decent on the opening weekend and didn’t go to another level until day 4.
The expert continued: “That’s why it makes sense for a big movie like… thanks God to be released on Tuesday. If it had been released on a Friday, it would have had four days of limited collections since Diwali falls on a Monday this year.”
It now remains to be seen whether the other Diwali release, Akshay Kumar’s RAM setuwill also be released on Tuesday 25 October, or opt for a traditional Friday release on October 21.
