Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have been married for 49 years. The couple has two children Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan and three grandchildren – Navya Naveli, Agastya and Aaradhya. Their eldest granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda hosts a podcast called What The Hell Navya, featuring her grandmother and mother Shweta Bachchan Nanda. They discuss various topics about their lives, social media, taboo topics and more. During a recent discussion, Navya was curious about how Amitabh proposed to Jaya.
Amitabh Bachchan had a condition while marrying Jaya Bachchan: ‘Don’t want a woman who goes to work from 9-5’
Jaya Bachchan revealed: “I was filming in Calcutta and we decided we would go on vacation if a movie we made is a hit. Zanjeer. The movie was a hit. I was filming for a movie in Calcutta and Nana (Grandpa) called and said, ‘There is a problem.’ We decided that we would get married in October because my work would have been cut off. He said, ‘I definitely don’t want a woman who turns 9-5.’ Please work, you have to work, but not every day. You choose your projects, work with the right people.'”
She continued, “I said okay. He then called me and said: ‘My parents say you can’t go on holiday with Jaya, if you want to go on holiday with her, you marry her’. He said, “What do you think?” I said, ‘Well, we were planning to get married in October, so it’s good that we do it in June’. Khatam (The end).”
Jaya Bachchan revealed it was a “free marriage” with Amitabh at her grandmother’s home in Mumbai. She went on to say, “I said, ‘But you’ll have to talk to my parents.’ He called my father and spoke to him. My father was not very happy, my father never wanted me to get married. We were three sisters. He said, ‘I didn’t bring you into this world just to educate yourself, get married, settle down and have children. I want you all to do something in life.” That was my father. And then he spoke to my father who said, “That’s fine. We don’t want a big wedding. My parents are still alive, I want them to be there’,’
On the work front, Jaya Bachchan will be featured in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi.
