Angela Bassett, Peter Krauss Postmortem Interview

,Spoiler alert: This post discusses the entirety of “9-1-1” Season 6, Episode 3, titled “The Devil You Know.”,

Unfortunately, Athena and Bobby aren’t going on that cruise anytime soon. In a spotlight on the “9-1-1” power pair played by Angela Bassett and Peter Cross, Episode 3 of Season 6 delves deeper into the mystery that started it.

“The Devil You Know” reveals what really happened to Athena’s hometown, Tanya Kingston, who was kidnapped decades ago and whose unsolved disappearance led to an LAPD officer on her way to becoming a police officer.

“It was so amazing to open the script and see that we were going to see that story again, and there was something very satisfying in that because it was an unsolved murder and was a driving force in why Athena became a cop and how she And who is that,” Bassett told TheWrap in an interview. “And yet it’s not because our writers have a way of weaving this fabric, this tapestry, where you can see this thread again, you can see this character again.”

The episode of the Fox procedural combines flashbacks to the night of Kingston’s disappearance with what really happened in the present day. Back in Episode 2, it was established that the girl’s body was found buried under the foundations of Athena’s childhood home, leading her to suspect that her father was responsible for the death. With Samuel (Henry G. Sanders) in a medically induced coma after suffering a stroke, Athena takes it upon herself to uncover the truth, going against her mother’s staunch defense of her husband. Despite the fear that he might do so.

“The mother-daughter tension has always been there, both of whom love this nice guy unconditionally, about whom there is some potential doubt in this episode. [for] Athena because she knows human nature and has seen a lot of things in her career,” Bassett said. “If so what would happen?” That’s just a small crack.

She continued, “Mom isn’t buying at all. I think mother will hide dead bodies [laughs], Athena was just hoping that no bodies were buried. that is something [Athena’s] The vulnerability is because at times she stutters, but when it comes to her father, the humanity is definitely on display. ,

For Krause, the episode’s narrative was emblematic of not only how “9-1-1” allows for “the freedom to tell the story,” but also the supportive relationship of Bobby and Athena.

“I think being first responders to both Bobby and Athena helps them navigate not only their jobs, but the ups and downs of their lives,” the actor told TheWrap. “That his father is implicated is particularly upsetting to him, so I think Bobby likes himself as a chair detective and enjoys doing that with him, these episodes are about their relationship.” and how they’ll be when they support the other going through something difficult. And it’s a particularly difficult thing that she has to start raising her parents, as well as this old cold- The case is to deal with the murder-mystery.”

At the episode’s conclusion, parallel images of Kingston running away from the killer – revealed to be Athena’s childhood friend, Jr. – intersect with Athena’s victorious pursuit through the same area. There is a sense of justice and finality as Athena endures the terror of Jr., who claimed the lives of several young girls.

,[Junior] He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing—she knew him,” said Bassett. “He was the one who followed [Athena] And if he had been able to catch her, that would have been another unfortunate affair, I’m pretty sure, so I really like all the layers to this episode. ,
