Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, gearing up for his next release Thu Baara, offered some insight into Hindi films struggling at the box office and the string of flops the industry has faced after theaters reopened. He also spoke about the state of Yash Raj Films, which had multiple box office flops with: Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Samrat Prithviraj, and shamshera.
Anurag Kashyap responds to YRF’s string of failures with Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Samrat Prithviraj and Shamshera: ‘Aditya Chopra hired a lot of people, he should empower them and not dictate’
Anurag Kashyap, while promoting Thu Baara, spoke to Galatta Plus about the state of the Hindi film industry, the films failing at the box office and why Hindi cinema is struggling. “The industry is such that people from all walks of life will keep walking in,” he said. “Here, cinema is largely controlled by those people, and that until the second generation, who grew up in test rooms. They have not lived life. So they refer to cinema. What cannot be seen on screen cannot be a cinema for them. The biggest problem with YRF is the test chamber effect. You take a story and you want a pirates of the caribbean out and it becomes Criminals of Hindustan. You take a story and you want a Mad Max: Fury Road out, and it becomes shamshera. The moment you go in that direction, you are deceiving yourself, especially in today’s time. A shamshera really would have worked two to three years ago.”
Anurag Kashyap said that Gujarat was nothing like Gujarat Jayeshbhai Jordaar. He said the movies are not rooted because the story in the script and what is being made is different. He also talked about YRF movies that failed back-to-back and how they continue to work in this set template. Anurag continued: “You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the outside world, dictating how everyone should make their movies and telling them what to do. Obviously you are digging your own grave. You have to empower people, you can’t dictate terms. That time is now over. If Aditya Chopra has hired a lot of people, he should empower them and not dictate, not control the casting, not control everything. Sit in your office, hire good people if you trust them, and let them make their movie. That’s the mistake he makes. He does not let them (be).”
On the work front, directed by Anurag Kashyap Thu Baara stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. It will be released on August 19, 2022.
