We could have seen it very well Aubrey Plaza revealed as one of the Ghostface killers in the scream franchise if she hadn’t completely screwed up her audition. In 2011, legendary horror director Wes Craven released the sequel to the slasher Shout 4, a film that ultimately turned out to be his last film. In addition to franchise mainstays such as Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, the film also starred Emma Roberts in a key role as Jill, one of the killers.
In a new interview with Hits Radio to promote her movie Emily the criminal, Plaza revealed that she had auditioned for Roberts’ role for Craven herself. Hoping to set herself apart from the competition, Plaza says she got the idea of using “full method” when she was told she would be reading for a character who turns out to be the killer. This meant dressing up to make themselves look like a cliché movie killer, but the problem was that it was the exact opposite of what they were looking for. As Plaza explains:
“One of the previous auditions I had was for Wes Craven for” [Scream 4], and they’d told me, “You’re going to audition to play — you’re going to play a character that you eventually find out is the killer, or whatever.” So I took that very literally, and I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to dress like the killer. And I went in and I looked terrible. I was really goofy, and my hair… because I thought, ‘I’m a murderer’. Everyone else was glamorous, and they all looked amazing, and I just looked insane. They said, ‘The whole point is we can’t know you’re the killer. You immediately look like a murderer.’ Anyway, I screwed that up. Yeah, didn’t get very far. I went full method, and it was bad. A very bad idea.”
Aubrey Plaza finally made it to a major horror franchise
scream was out of the picture for Aubrey Plaza, but she would soon have a chance to join another famous horror franchise. She starred in 2019’s Child’s play, a remake of the classic killer puppet film starring Mark Hamill as a new incarnation of Chucky. The film has received mixed opinions from horror fans, in part because of the original Chucky the timeline is still running, but everyone seemed to agree that Plaza’s casting was one of the film’s highlights.
There will be other places for fans to catch Plaza in the future. After Emily the criminalPlaza is next featured in Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Rose du Guerre, in which the actress is part of an ensemble that also includes Jason Statham, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone and Hugh Grant. She will also appear in Francis Ford Coppola’s big-budget film, megapolisalongside other names such as Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LeBeouf and Nathalie Emmanuel.
