Barely Deadly (2015): The Best Characters, Ranked

Hardly fatal (2015) is an underrated action comedy that tells the story of a young government spy agent who was recruited at a young age and knows nothing about a typical teenage lifestyle except what she has gathered from teen magazines and chick flicks. Despite her desire for attachment, this agent is considered the top agent at the Prescott Agency.

Here we are going to take a look at this young cop and the other characters who influenced the story over the 98 minute running time of the film. We discuss the character’s personalities, their impact on the story, and any scenes that left a strong impression on the viewer. With a lot of spies and a lot of high school shenanigans, this movie had a pretty eclectic cast.

8/8 Cash Fenton

Cash Fenton (Toby Sebastian) is the guy every girl wants to be with. Well, every girl and a very scary staff member. Cash is the lead singer and guitarist of the high school rock band and initially the object of the affections of Agent 83/Megan (Hailee Steinfeld). After helping Megan feel more comfortable on her first day of school, it soon becomes apparent that Cash is used to getting everyone’s attention.

Even mr. Drumm (Dan Fogler) uses his authority to keep Cash close, making him his scientific partner and making him multiple attempts to interact with Cash outside of a school setting. Cash only seems to have eyes for Megan, despite Agent 84/Heather (Sophie Turner)’s attempts to seduce him. But when Megan starts to reject him, Cash immediately withdraws emotionally and tells him to prepare for his performance, a clear sign that he’s not used to being rejected in such a way.

7/8 Bernardus

Affectionately known as Gooch, Bernard (Gabriel Basso) comes across as the quintessential high school jock. Gooch, who usually makes bad jokes and harasses Megan for her quirks, wouldn’t reveal his more vulnerable side until he started bonding with Liz (Dove Cameron). Liz, frustrated with Megan, joins the party to get drunk and finds Gooch in the bathtub, bottle in hand.

The two would begin a drunken bond, with Gooch even admitting he wants to be an actor, giving Liz a quick, emotional monologue to show his skill. While most of their conversation takes place off screen, the next time we see Gooch, Liz’s date will be for homecoming and he informs Cash that he wants to start using his real name, Bernard. This vulnerability shows that Liz really influenced Bernard and made him as comfortable being himself as he made her feel.

6/8 Mrs Larson

mrs. Larson (Rachel Harris) is the mother of Liz and Parker (Jason Drucker) and becomes Megan’s foster mother when Megan takes on the role of a foreign exchange student. After recently losing her husband, Mrs. Larson tries to be a more fun mom and finds the opportunity to positively impact Megan’s life as an opportunity to reconnect with her own children.

Her techniques can be questionable at times, more often than not, leading to Parker openly playing with Megan’s spy equipment and insisting that Megan and Liz go to a house party and get drunk. While her stern maternal instincts come to the fore after discovering that the girls stayed overnight in the house, she still tries to positively influence their lives with her advice and care.

5/8 heath

Heather would grow up in the Prescott Agency, constantly fighting Megan in attempts to usurp her role as number one agent. Constantly following the rules to the letter, Heather grows increasingly frustrated when Megan gets all the high-priority jobs. After catching Agent 1/Victoria Knoxx (Jessica Alba), Heather is easily persuaded by Victoria to become a double agent.

Heather set her sights on their mutual enemy in Megan and followed Megan’s lead by becoming an exchange student and setting her eyes on Cash to get inside Megan’s head and ruin her life. Failing that, Heather began seducing Roger (Thomas Mann), knowing that his feelings, albeit unintentionally, were being rejected by Megan. This would lead to quite the battle between the pair, the fun action crowd the audience had been waiting for in this action comedy.

4/8 hard man

Hardman (Samuel L. Jackson) heads the Prescott Agency and is seen as the opposite of a father figure to the little girls he employs. Hardman comes across as a stubborn person who is all about results and constantly preaches that they are not a rescue team and that the number one rule for all agents is to have no attachments.

Jackson proves able to do much of his signature comedy in the role, with a memorable scene when he hears an explosion during a bomb defusing training session. He very nonchalantly checks on a little girl and tells her that this is why they wear the safety gear in a soft but sturdy way, making the audience chuckle.

3/8 Roger

Roger follows the more prototypical boy next door stereotype in that he falls for a girl but is soon ignored in favor of the more charming schoolboy. Trying not to let this stop her, Roger continues to be a nice person to Megan, becoming her friend even when she was known as an outcast in the early days of the school year.

While Roger tries to accept that his feelings for Megan will not be reciprocated, he is attacked by Heather. After a fight between Megan and Heather, Roger is left alone at the dance. After being miserable, he begins to go with his father, who still doesn’t quite understand his son when Megan arrives in a helicopter, eventually claiming she is reciprocating Roger’s feelings.

2/8 Liz Larson

Dove Cameron brings a lot of brutality to her role as Liz, the anxious teenager who seems content to just drop by by the school year and keep her head down. Annoyed by the idea that her family is just openly welcoming a stranger into their home, Liz is curt with Megan. Unbelievable about how Megan has gone viral after fending off kidnappers from a rival high school, Liz would become openly more hostile.

The girls would begin to bond after being attacked by Victoria Knoxx, while Megan would recount her life as a secret agent. Liz would open up to Megan as the two have come to understand each other better over the course of the film. Liv’s bond with Megan and her newfound romance with Bernard help her to be honest, and she begins to find happiness with her family and friends, because she sees Megan as a sister.

1/8 Megan

Megan grew up as a secret agent wanting nothing more than to feel what it is like to have attachments and to be part of a real family. Most of her knowledge of how high school works comes from teen magazines and Mean Girls (2004), Megan initially stands out among her peers. Megan pretends to be a foreign exchange student from Canada and tries to get closer to her new family and classmates, but ends up committing social faux pas, such as refusing to sit with a group of girls, assuming they would bully her as part of a stereotypical high school cheerleader.

While Hardman tries to take Megan back, she declines his offer and insists on keeping her new life as she begins to gain popularity. After defeating Heather and saving her adoptive family from Victoria Knoxx, Megan and her new sister Liv would woo the boys on a helicopter ride to celebrate a very memorable homecoming.
