Batman Beyond movie starring Michael Keaton canceled after DC leadership shakeup

According to the rumor mill, James Gunn and Peter Safran taking control of the DCU led to a much-requested Batman Beyond movie being scrapped.

For better or for worse, plans for the future of the DCU change dramatically with new leadership taking the reins. It was recently revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran would act as co-CEOs of DC Studios. Many major updates have already resulted from this change recently, such as the announcement that Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 3 is cancelled. There are also rumors that Black Adam 2 won’t progress either, which could put a quick end to Henry Cavill’s Superman’s return just as quickly as he reappeared.

Gunn has since come out on Twitter and said that while some of the recent rumors are true, others aren’t, though he hasn’t clarified exactly what’s what. Meanwhile, the rumor mill continues to bring out more bits of information about the DCU’s future slate. The latest rumor bomb is that a solo Batman movie starring Michael Keaton which was secretly planned is now also gone. According to film reporter Umberto Gonzalez, that film was written by The flash writer Christina Hodson, would have been the highly anticipated one Batman over movie.

Officially, one Batman over film was never announced, but it has long been clear that this is something fans have been looking for. Even before it was announced that Keaton would reprise his role as Batman for The flash and the cancelled bat girlthere had been a lot of pressure from fans campaigning for a live action Batman over develop adaptation. The idea was that Keaton could return as an older Bruce Wayne to mentor a new Batman, which was the plot of the original version of the animated series.

The animated series Batman over featured the voice of the late Batman actor Kevin Conroy, whose passing still stings fans of the Dark Knight. Will Friedle also played the voice of Terry McGinnis, the young man who dresses up as the new Batman under Bruce Wayne’s tutelage. It wasn’t that long ago that Friedle offered his support for a Batman over movie to be made. After first expressing his desire to work with Conroy again on an animated series revival, which sadly never materialized, Friedle said a live-action adaptation would be “great” to see.

“You know, seeing a live-action version would be great,” Friedle said ComicBookMovie.com in May. “Just seeing the character again is amazing. He’s had such a rich life in the comics world and I think he deserves to be back on screen in some form. At some point in the future I know I’m sure he will. Who knows, but I have to imagine they’ll eventually make a movie or another series.”
