Benedict Wong Shares His Importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Benedict Wong was the glue that held Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. His character, Wong, is the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme, giving him an interest he didn’t have in the Infinity Saga era. Wong seems to appear in almost every Marvel project these days, be it a feature film or a Disney+ series. His character has found its way to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand She-Hulk: Lawyer all in the past two years.

Wong is a character who plays a more prominent role in the events to come in the Multiverse Saga, as Kevin Feige and Disney intentionally included his presence more than any other hero in the current phase. However, one reason could be the introduction of all the new characters. Be it Tatiana Maslany, Simu Liu or Xochitl Gomez, the MCU has seen a lot of new faces lately. Wong tells The Hollywood Reporter that it’s almost his job to welcome new actors to the franchise as they find their roles in the larger connected universe.

“Yeah. It’s funny because I remember that with Simu. When they were filming I think when they saw me coming they finally realized they were in a Marvel movie. I put my wax seal of approval I mean, of course, what else can I do but welcome to the MCU – or sorry, the WCU [Wong Cinematic Universe], or whatever. And whatever learning curves and curveballs I can add or any advice, I’m always there. Especially with Xochitl too, just a big-eyed rabbit in the headlights. I think it’s kind of a duty, to be a member of a big ensemble, to keep people a little bit stable and reassured.”

We don’t know what Wong’s next project will be, whether it be… Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, or something completely different. However, fans will welcome the Sorcerer Supreme in any movie or series he wants to be a part of.

Is Wong ready for a standalone project?

Benedict Wong is an MCU veteran, but would the actor be ready for a standalone project? Nearly every hero in the universe will receive one project based on their character, be it in a feature film format or a Disney+ series. But does Wong justify his own story outside of the spotlight of another character? Wong tells THR that he believes there is room to do this.

“You know, a lot of people have said that. Yes, I could certainly come up with some ideas. But hey, it’s not up to me to push that. If you ever see anyone, send the question over there. I mean, look, I love playing this role, and I think there are so many more possibilities that we can go into with a series, yes.”

A story about Wong’s origin or what he does while the other MCU heroes are fighting together could be an exciting take on the character. We have already seen something of his daily life in She-Hulk, but watching the Sorcerer Supreme fight a villain all alone can be good for his development. Benedict Wong is one of the most beloved actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so don’t be surprised if Kevin Feige tries to capitalize on his popularity.
