In 2023 it will be 21 years since Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff Tribeca Film Festival in the aftermath of the devastating 9/11 attacks, in an effort to revitalize New York’s film and art scene. The festival prided itself on providing a platform for independent films and filmmakers to express themselves to the industry, providing them with the exposure that can help their careers in the years to come.


From smaller budget movies like Dark touch And King Jack to premiering studio-backed movies from streaming services like Steven Soderbergh’s No sudden movement And Jerry & Marge go big, Tribeca is a non-discriminatory festival celebrating all areas of the world of cinema. With this year’s festival just a few weeks away, let’s take a look at some of the very best movies to premiere.

The Adults, (United States) – North American premiere

2023 is a year that looks promising for Michael Cera’s career, who is still looking to recapture the form in which he became one of the most in-demand actors in the late 2000s. Dustin Guy Defa’s comedy drama, The grown-ups concerns the relationships of three distant siblings who reunite for a weekend where they can catch up and reform their childhood bond. However, their brother Eric (Cera) is torn between spending time with his sisters and a local poker game.

Christian Petzold returns to critical acclaim in 2020 Udinewith another German-language episode, the comedy-drama, A fire. Set in Northern Europe on the coast of the Baltic Sea, a group of friends go on an idyllic vacation. Unfortunately, their quiet escape doesn’t last long when an unwanted guest disrupts their plans. Not only are the friends forced to contend with an unwelcome presence, but the imminent threat of a wildfire in the local area is an increasingly prominent threat.

The Blackening, (United States) – American premiere

From the improv comedy group 3peat, The blackening is a celebration of black cinema, writing and the horror genre itself, and follows a group of seven friends who go on a cabin retreat in the woods (what could go wrong?). Of course, as with any cinematic outing in the woods, their stay soon descends into chaos and carnage ensues. Who survives is a mystery. What’s shaping up to be a comedic deconstruction of racist tropes in the horror genre should be a whole lot of terrifying fun.

Bucky F*cking Dent, (United States) – World Premiere

No true creative person depends solely on one source of income, and in the case of aspiring novelist Ted, he earns his corn by thrashing peanuts at Yankee Stadium. After discovering his estranged father is terminally ill, Ted tries to make amends and resolve their troubled relationship. Of course, unpredictability lurks around the corner. Bucky F*cking Dent is something of a passion project for star David Duchovny, who is also writing and directing the movie, which is based on his book.

Cinnamon, (United States) – World premiere

The great Pam Grier is unrecognizable as the heavy metal biker cowboy, Mama, a true departure from her glamorous portrayals of Coffy and Foxy Brown, in Bryan Keith Montgomery Jr. Cinnamon. The Tribeca entry follows two young lovers as they risk their arms to achieve their dreams. Cinnamon is a gripping and eccentric image that expertly addresses the issue of Blaxploitation.

Downtown Owl, (United States) – World Premiere

Henry Golding stars alongside Vanessa Hudgens and Ed Harris, in the film adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s brilliant novel, Owl in the inner city. There is indeed a town in North Dakota called Owl, and it’s the backdrop to this tale of a strange assortment of characters preparing for a blizzard of epic proportions.

Michael Shannon is an all-consuming actor, but for the new picture, Eric LaRue, the iconic movie villain (The Shape of Water, Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire) is behind the camera for his directorial debut. Following a son’s murderous crime, his parents (including the great Judy Greer) pursue various forms of solace by standing against religious cults in this dramatic, emotionally charged film.

The world of the mafia family has always captivated the curiosity of the movie industry, and again, in Jennifer Esposito’s crime drama, Fresh kills, the affairs of a notorious New York crime family go under the microscope of the movie. After a mob boss is imprisoned, the women of the Lo Russo Mafia must navigate the dangerous criminal underworld of 1980s and 1990s New York, leaning on the Mafia’s unspoken code.

Shortcomings, (United States) – Premiered in New York

Social commentary and satirical feature films currently cost two cents, but Randall Park’s directorial debut, Shortcomings promises to be an exuberant event, describing the romantic lives of three protagonists. The film, which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, will be released internationally later this year and will once again hit the big screen at a festival, this time in Tribeca.
