Oscars 2023 Predictions: Best Original Song

CATEGORY COMMENT:

“RRR” caused a stir around the world, even reaching mainstream audiences thanks to American distribution from Variance Films. There are many wonderful numbers from the film, but the awards campaign team decided to push the track “Naatu Naatu”

At a recent public screening of the film at the TCL Chinese Theatre, where Academy members and Guild voters were also present, the epic’s megafans stood up and started singing and dancing when the “Naatu Naatu” scene was playing. The infectious musical numbers and likeable filmmakers make their rounds. The buzz continues to mount.

Also up for grabs this year are songs from some of the world’s biggest musicians, including music superstar Lady Gaga, who penned the anthem “Hold My Hand” to box office juggernaut “Top Gun: Maverick.” Fresh off her shocking Best Actress snub for “House of Gucci,” the music branch has never wavered in their love for “Mama Monster.” Shown by her two previous names in this category – “Til ‘it Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground” (2015) and Oscar-winning “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” (2018), for which she was also nominated for the best actress.

Taylor Swift performs and writes the song “Carolina” from Sony’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” something that might factor into the awards conversation. She’ll get double exposure this season with her short film “All Too Well” starring Sadie Sink, which is up for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.

Billie Eilish and Finneas walked away with the statuette in this category last year for the James Bond song “No Time to Die” from the film of the same title. The musical-brother duo look like solid bets to return with the charming “Nobody Like U” from Pixar’s “Turning Red,” which is gaining momentum for Best Animated Feature.

And never count on the power of Diane Warren, who will receive an honorary Oscar this year. She’s back with another track “Applause” from Samuel Goldwyn Films’ documentary “Tell It Like a Woman.”

There are even more songs to follow and the table below is not complete as eligibility and submissions may change.
