Prior to the film’s release, there were some complaints on social media from people criticizing the casting of a Cuban actress like Marilyn Monroe. Director Andrew Dominik was on hand to cast Ana de Armas, claiming in an interview with Screen Daily that people would be impressed by her performance regardless of her ethnicity.

“She’s damn awesome – the only thing no one is going to complain about is” [de Armas’] performance,” said Dominic.

blond also received an NC-17 rating, but that didn’t come as a big shock to Dominik. The director also commented on the rating that it had no effect on the fact that he didn’t cut any content for a lighter rating, as it was important for him to be candid about telling the Monroe’s story.

“It’s a demanding film,” he said. “If the public doesn’t like it, that’s the goddamn public’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I wants to see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

blond will begin streaming on Netflix on September 28, 2022. You can watch the official trailer and synopsis for the film below.

Ana de Armas is Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, coming to Netflix in September. From writer and director Andrew Dominik, and based on Joyce Carol Oates’ bestseller, Blonde commemorates the complicated life of icon Marilyn Monroe. The film blurs the lines of fact and fiction and artfully explores the tension between her public and private life.
