Last month there were reports that Kashmir’s first multiplex will be opened very soon in the capital Srinagar. This three-room theater is run by the renowned multiplex chain Inox. Many expected the theater to start with Brahmastraon Sept 9. That didn’t happen and now the multiplex starts on September 20th.

BREAKING: Kashmir’s first multiplex opens on September 20 with the screening of Laal Singh Chaddha, the star of Aamir Khan; RRR becomes the first film to be screened in the state in 32 years

Bollywood Hungama has been informed that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, will inaugurate the cinema hall on Tuesday. A source told Bollywood Hungama“It will be a big event and will be featured in the national media. After all, it will be Kashmir’s first multiplex and the first time in nearly 30 years that films will be released in this state, just like in the rest of the country.”

The source also said: “The special showing of Laal Singh Chaddha will take place on the opening day. In other words, the Aamir Khan starrer would be the first movie to ever be played in Kashmir’s premier multiplex. However, it will not be open to the public and only the media and guests of the function will have access to the screening.”

When asked when the theater will open to the public, the source said: “Next week it will happen. It is currently the time of ‘shraddh’ and therefore the owners do not want to start any commercial activities during this period. However, the inauguration will take place.” during ‘shraddh’, as the lieutenant governor will travel after a few days and therefore will not be available.

Meanwhile, on September 18, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha opened multi-purpose cinemas, located in Pulwama and Shopian districts.

According to local media reports, the auditoriums have been converted into cinemas. Young students, panchayat members and members of the District Development Council attended the inauguration ceremony. Photos and videos of these people along with Manoj Sinha in the auditoriums were posted on social media. On screen, clips from Farhan Akhtar-starrer Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and SS Rajamoulis RRR are visible, leading many to believe that these two films premiered in these theaters.

However, Rahul Nehra, founder and director of Jadooz, which manages these halls, said: Bollywood Hungama“We showed the trailers of bhaag Milkha Bhaag, RRR, Swades and Bose: The Forgotten Hero. A non-commercial display of RRR, but was kept for the students.” This means that RRR has become the first film to be screened in Kashmir after three decades.

Rahul Nehra revealed: “Two weeks later, we are organizing a children’s film festival in these theaters in Pulwama and Shopian. And in 4 weeks we plan to start commercial operations and screen new releases i.e. around Diwali.”

There are also plans to inaugurate theaters soon in Anantnag, Srinagar, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar and Reasi districts. The move is significant as theaters in Kashmir have been closed since 1990 due to militancy. In 1999, then-CM Farooq Abdullah attempted to reopen cinemas and even announced a cash grant for theater owners. A few movie theaters such as Neelam, Regal and Broadway reopened. However, terrorists detonated grenades in Regal and Neelam, and theaters closed again.
