Mani Ratnam is all set to release his highly anticipated film, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, in cinemas and the tension is palpable. After all, he is considered one of the best filmmakers of Indian cinema. The trend of having crossover movies has picked up recently, but his movies have been around since the time of the Roja (1992). So not only in the southern markets, but Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 has a chance to excel even in the Hindi belts, when it releases on September 30.

Mani Ratnam along with his film’s cast – Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi and Trisha – and composer AR Rahman attended the film’s grand press conference in Mumbai on September 24. revealed that Ajay Devgn did the story in the film. He revealed about this and also thanked the versatile star, with whom he had previously worked in Yuvac (2004). He also thanked Anil Kapoor for recording the Hindi dubbed version of the theatrical trailer.
Mani Ratnam said:PS (Ponniyin Selvan) has been a dream for a long time, since the time I first read the book during my school days. I didn’t think I’d ever get into movies and I didn’t think I’d make it. But it has always been my calling to be made. It is as spectacular as a story and as an adventure. Several people had tried this before. They couldn’t for various reasons. Maybe they wanted to leave it for me! I’m so happy and so glad I got the chance to make it even at a time when technology has improved a lot. This allowed us to make it with much more comfort and authenticity. To be able to do that with this kind of cast and crew, with actors who are not only suitable for the role but also care for the film, is very special. I want to thank each of them. I also want to thank the producer (Allirajah Subaskaran) who trusted us and gave us the money to go ahead and make it.”
Mani Ratnam then added: “I have two more people to thank. They are from the Hindi film industry. One of them is Anil Kapoor. It was his voice in the trailer. And the other is Ajay Devgn. It will be his voice in the be a movie.”
Mani Ratnam later revealed his earlier attempt at making Ponniyin Selvan more than three decades ago. He said, “This is the movie that MG Ramachandran wanted to make. And I thought of making it after my movie Nayakan (1987) with Kamal Haasan. We both wanted to make this movie. We hadn’t started casting yet. We just had Kamal as a hero and we were working on the script. And it didn’t happen because it’s too big. We couldn’t put the whole story in one movie. Besides, we couldn’t afford it.”
