History was made on Sunday. The musician j-hope, from South Korean juggernaut BTS, became the first South Korean artist to headline this year’s Lollapalooza in Chicago, marking a place for himself in the festival’s history to pull in crowds in large numbers. . After the release of his solo album Jack In The Box earlier in July, the 27-year-old musician took the stage and captivated the audience in his more than 70-minute performance.

Lollapalooza continues to be a powerful festival brand around the world, delivering highly anticipated and diverse multi-genre lineups while continuing to produce extraordinary musical moments throughout its 30-year history. On Sunday night, j-hope performed a total of 18 tracks, including all 10 tracks from his new album, a few tracks from his 2018 mixtape Hope World and added the songs of BTS ‘BTS Cypher Pt. 1’the ‘Tropical Remix’ of ‘Dynamite‘, ‘Trivia: Just Dance’ and ‘Outro: Ego’ in his enigmatic set. He also released his single 2019 ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’for which his co-worker and friend Becky G made a surprise appearance.

For j-hop, being on stage is not new. He has been on stage and with the pop titans BTS since childhood. This was his first solo stage in his 9 year career as a rapper and he loved every minute of it. The main stage is made with the theme: Jack In The Box. He paid tribute to the Wu-Tang Clan’s ‘Old pervert’ through the VCR like he had sampled ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’‘ for his song What If and even gave a shoutout to DJ Webstar and Young B, the original creators of ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’. While the audience was filled with ARMY (BTS fandom), this was a segway for j-hope to introduce his music to a diverse audience. From having a live band to performing with dancers in some sections, he showcased all facets of being an artist and what an all-round musician he is. His performance was solid, polished, narratively rich and magical. There were times when it felt like he was in a trance, enjoying the cheers as he finished his set with his ‘Future‘ track that leaves a door open for more such endeavors in the near future.

The evening ended with a statement in Korean, j-hope reflecting on his monumental moment, saying: “This is part of a grand finale to the album process that is based on my greed and fierce ambition. All album schedules are my flesh and blood And by doing Lollapalooza, and by our ARMYs and the general public, I’ve come to form a firmer faith, a firmer faith.”

In the meantime, Jack in the box, as the album title suggests, presents j-hope’s that jump out of the box and show new, different sides of him and how much he’s grown as an artist. The album contains a total of 10 songs: “Intro”, “Pandora’s Box”, “MORE”, “STOP”, “= (Equal Sign)”, “Music Box: Reflection”, “What if…”, “Safety Zone”, “Future”, and “Arson.” The smooth flow of the story in the album, starting with the first track and ending with the last track, is striking. j-hope participated in making the overall album of music, concept, design and music video, bringing out its own unique colors throughout the album.
