Lumpy Space Princess makes 21 major appearances in Adventure Time, stealing the Cartoon Network show with its theatrics and catchphrase, “Oh my Glob!”. Of course, the reason she’s a fan favorite is that she’s equally apathetic, chaotic, and heroic. She wavers between homelessness, romantic failure and self-actualization. Without her, many in the Land of Ooo would be lost. Bubble Space Princess is a reminder to love yourself and forget the haters. Essentially she’s for Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time what Lizzo is to the real world. While she may seem selfish, Lumpy Space Princess has one of the series’ biggest heroic arcs.
She is trying her best
Voiced by Pendleton Ward, Lumpy Space Princess is the most theatrical character in Adventure Time. In her debut, she accidentally bites Jake, gives him the lumps, and inadvertently takes Finn and Jake to Bubble Room for the cure. After their frustration with her, she tearfully tells the duo, “I know I mess things up sometimes, but I really try!” Her plea is a rallying cry for all who are aware of their behavior and at the same time try to get better. healthy psych discusses the benefits of trying, claiming it’s good for your health: “If you keep trying things, in the form of that next step, you’ll eventually finish your project. An enormous amount of satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment comes with finishing something you started, no matter how it ends.” The great thing about Lumpy Space Princess is that she actively tries, whether it’s a new job, love interest, or helping others in Ooo.
Self love over self hate
Loving oneself can often be praised or criticized, depending on who is in the pulpit. In the past decade, the concept of self-love has resurfaced thanks to social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Sometimes it seems like everyone from celebrities, influencers, and even religious leaders is preaching the benefits of self-love. Various media outlets are reminding readers that they are not alone in their journey of self-love. During Adventure TimeLumpy Space Princess reflects the need for community on one’s self-love journey. Though she often lives alone in Ooo, she develops a strong friendship with Turtle Princess, Ooo’s librarian, who at one point encourages Lumpy Space Princess to write a messy novel. Lumpy Space Princess carries a garbage bag and tries to make Finn fall in love with her, but she falls for Finn. Ultimately, she is an example in positive self-talk, even if it is unpleasant for others. She constantly tells Finn that she loves her lumps or that she loves her hot body. Even the slightest thing, Lumpy Space Princess talks about itself in the most positive light.
The road to empathy
Bubble Space Princess may seem self-centered in Adventure Time, but she has a few moments where she shows real empathy and compassion for others. In Season 4, Finn and Jake are hired by Lumpy Space King and Queen, who want them to deliver sandwiches to her. The brothers come across a village infested by a monster, which turns out to be Lumpy Space Princess. Before she destroyed the village, she lived with a pack of wolves. She thought one of the wolves was cheating on their boyfriend, and although they weren’t talking about wolves, they chased her out of their cave. Although it was none of her business, she showed compassion for her fellow wolves by trying to keep the pack together. Later she gives the sandwiches to the villagers as an apology for eating all their crops.
The anti-element of Ooo
When Patience St. Pim activates the elementals, Finn, Jake, Ice King and Betty are the only hope of saving the Land of Ooo. Except Jake merges into Slime Princess, where Finn leaves with Lumpy Space Princess, Ice King, and Betty. Lumpy Space Princess and Finn enter the Realm of Fire, where he is overtaken by the Fire element and become Fire Finn, aiming to destroy the nerds of the Realm of Fire. Nonchalantly, Lumpy Space Princess told him that she had passed through all areas of Ooo without changing or being absorbed. Of course, when Finn is transformed, it’s Lumpy Space Princess who reminds him of his hero heart, seemingly transforming him back to his human form. But after Betty and Ice King dump Finn and Lumpy Space Princess, the duo must rescue Ooo themselves. While Finn speculates that Lumpy Space Princess’s ability to move through each area remains unchanged, she becomes verbally bored, leading him to realize she is the key to saving Ooo. She wears the Ice King crown, literally plants herself in Ooo and turns everyone back to normal. She literally saves all of Ooo by always doing her best, her inspiring self-love and ability to show compassion even when she’s wrong.
