what’s hot
Vikram is great as usual. Once again he chooses a role to show his versatility and does a great job with it. Be it his body language, dialogue delivery and running style, he is a joy to watch when on screen. Also, all the hallucination scenes performed by the star hero are excellent. Apart from his acting, Srinidhi Shetty got a meaty role and she did her best. Mrunalini Ravi gets a neat part in the flashback and she was good. Special mention to Irfan Pathan. stands out as the best in its limited role. Roshan Matthews’ gets a negative role and he nailed it. However, his character goes down the hill in the second half. As far as technical aspects are concerned, the production values are top notch. AR Rahman’s BGM steals the show and it ramps up proceedings.
However, the numbers have failed. The dialogues are decent and so is the camera work. The editing could have been a lot better as almost 20 minutes of the film would have been cropped. Director Ajay Gnanamuthu has chosen a new background, but he failed to tell it exciting and entertaining. He also created a complex scenario that confuses things even more and may not be easily understood by the general public. The first half captivates us here and there. The Interval block leaves us astonished and also sets expectations for the second half. Vikram’s performance is a joy to watch on screen.
What not
Cobra goes downhill from the start of the second half. From an exciting thriller, Cobra turns into a boring film in the second half. The long flashback in particular kills all the excitement and puts the audience’s patience to the test. The dramatic moments with hallucinations cause more confusion instead of arousing the audience. Editing could have been a lot better as there is more crop to be done. The conflict between the key roles is also not portrayed well by the director. Above all, a simple storyline is made more complicated for no reason.
BL verdict
Apart from Vikram’s fantastic acting and a fine interval block, Cobra doesn’t have much to offer. It’s a half-baked thriller that starts off well, but goes downhill as the story progresses. Better execution and editing may have saved the film for the most part. We give Cobra 3 out of 5 stars.
