Comedian Hannah Gadsby signs multi-title Netflix deal

Emmy and Peabody Award-winning comic Hannah Gadsby has signed a multi-title deal with Netflix to include a new one-hour special that will tap during her “Body of Work” world tour in Sydney.

Comedians based in Tasmania, Australia will also produce and host a multi-comic special performing artists of all gender identities. Gadsby was notably one of the Netflix-affiliated geniuses, who called on streamer and co-CEO Ted Sarandos to support Dave Chappelle’s special, “The Closer,” which featured anti-trans and LGBTQ+ content.

“In an effort to open a door that I had to fight to keep myself from, I will curate and host a line-up show featuring six new, gender-diverse comedians on Netflix,” Gadsby said in a statement. “In a notoriously transphobic industry, I want to expand the variety of offerings to audiences on one of comedy’s biggest platforms, while also broadening the scope of opportunities for gender-castes around the world.”

Their statement continued: “With a mentorship initiative for these upcoming comics, the program aims to foster the professional development of a demographic that is still struggling to make their voices heard. Record in one go in the UK by 2023 Done, it will be a chance for the world to hear these voices for the first time, but certainly not for the last time.”

Gadsby’s new set will mark her third Netflix comedy special after the critically acclaimed “Nanette” (2018), which earned her an Emmy and Peabody, and “Douglas” (2020), which was twice Emmy-nominated.

The new special, which will premiere in 2023, will be recorded live at the Sydney Opera House this week, marking the comedian’s return to the “Nannette” filming location.
