2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Weekly Commentary: Kerry Washington is quite brilliant in the Hulu comedy series “Unprisoned” alongside Delroy Lindo. Although she was an Emmy winner (for Outstanding Variety Special for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times'”), she never won for playing despite the names for the limited series “Little Fires Everywhere,” the TV movie “Confirmation,” and for the drama series “Scandal.”

It’s something new for her, and she pulls off a complicated role with heart and sincerity, which the TV Academy might recognize.

Selena Gomez, the influential superstar of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” was sadly omitted from the lead actress in a comedy category for the show’s first season. For her second outing as dry-witted Mabel, she’s even better, making the odds of another omission even worse for the TV Academy.

But there is hope. With a seemingly less competitive run for the lead actress comedy this time around, Gomez’s chances are better, especially with back-to-back “Hacks” winner Jean Smart out of the running this year. One of the six probably coveted slots (based on the total number of submissions) could belong to him.

Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series as one of the first season’s executive producers, Gomez made history as the third Latina ever recognized after Salma Hayek (“Ugly Betty”) and Marlis Pujol (“The Way Kominsky”). She’ll be looking for a double name this time around.

The race still has many favorites in the ranks, including past winners and nominees.

Creator, writer, and “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson might be the front-runner with the mockumentary’s standout second season. However, she could face stiff competition from Rachel Brosnahan or Christina Applegate, who are campaigning for their final seasons of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Dead to Me.”

Freshman shows will have contenders to add, including Natasha Lyonne of Peacock’s “Poker Face” and Jenna Ortega for Netflix’s “Wednesday.”

And then there are the underrated artists, who still hope to be recognized after several seasons and years in the business. Among those are Bridget Everett of “Somebody Somewhere” and Robin Thede of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” both from HBO.

Voting for Emmy nominations takes place June 15-26. Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and subject to change.
