Cynthia Erivo plays ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ on D23

Cynthia Erivoplaying the Blue Fairy in the Disney+ live-action remake of Pinocchiotook the stage at the D23 “Studio Showcase, Day 1: Celebrate the Magic of Disney and Pixar” panel to perform “When You Wish Upon a Star”, the song most associated with the iconic character.


Held in Hall D23 on Friday, September 9, 2022, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, the panel will highlight the Disney magic that has in store for viewers in theaters and at home on Disney+.

Pinocchio is a live action and CGI remake of the 1940 animated Disney classic directed by Robert Zemeckis. It’s the latest live-action and CGI remake of a classic Disney animated musical to be released, following films like Cinderella, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beastand aladdin.

Pinocchio reunites Forrest Gump director Zemeckis with the star of that film, Tom Hanks, playing the toy maker Geppetoo. Starring Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the doll of the same name, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket and Erivo as the Blue Fairy, the character responsible for fulfilling the puppet Pinocchio’s wish to be a real boy.

The film’s cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John, Luke Evans as The Coachman, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a newly introduced character. In addition, Giuseppe Battiston plays Stromboli, Lewin Lloyd plays Lampwick, Jaquita plays Ta’le Sabina and Kyanne Lamaya plays Fabiana.


Three new songs in Pinocchio

Ervio’s performance of “When You Wish Upon a Star” on D23 underscores the fact that the song is one of three compositions from the original musical to be included in the remake. The other two are “Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee”, performed by Key as Honest John, and “I’ve Got No Strings”, performed by Ainsworth as Pinocchio, along with a chorus of puppets.

Other performances by Ervio are performances Needle in a Timestack, the maverickand Bad times in El Royale. Her upcoming projects include the two-part big-screen adaptation of Badin which Ariana Grande will also play.

Pinocchio is currently available for streaming on Disney+ and was released on September 8, 2022, the second annual Disney+ Day. Other released titles include: Thor: Love and Thunder and a short cartoon starring Lisa Simpson and several well-known Disney villains named The Simpsons: Welcome to the Club. Additional releases include: BTS: Permission to Dance: Onstance – LA and the latest episode of She-Hulk: Lawyer“Isn’t this real magic?”
