With true crime more popular than ever, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story continues to break records on Netflix. The series debuts on the streaming platform in September and comes from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Evan Peters stars in one of his most acclaimed performances to date as Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer and necrophile who cannibalized many victims during a reign of terror that lasted from the late 1970s to early 1990s.
According to a new report, Dahmer remains firmly in the top spot for the most-watched English TV shows of the week for Netflix. This is the third week in a row Dahmer as the No. 1 in that spot, with over 205 million hours streamed from October 3 through October 9. Over 701 million hours in total Dahmer have been streamed worldwide, making it the second most popular English-language series on Netflix. Nothing but Stranger Things 4with 1.35 billion hours earned in the first month of release, it says above Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
If we take into account non-English speaking shows, then: squid game is the title that ranks first as the most popular TV show of all time on Netflix. The South Korean series managed to stream 1.65 billion hours within 28 days. The Spanish Crime Drama money robbery is another popular series with part five of that show exceeding 792 million hours. That would say Dahmer at number 4 on the overall list, just above the second season of Bridgerton.
A true crime wave led to Dahmer’s success on Netflix
Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story took advantage of coming out at a time when true crime couldn’t be more popular. Netflix is going to discover more with Dahmer and with the docuseries Conversations with a Killer: Jeffrey Dahmer’s Tapes is coming to the streaming platform this month. That follows previous Conversations with a killer series about Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy. Netflix also debuted the film Extremely bad, shockingly bad and mean in 2019 with Zac Efron in the role of Bundy.
But for whatever reason, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story had more appeal than any previous true crime offering on Netflix. An acclaimed performance by Evan Peters in the lead role is certainly one reason fans have tuned in. There has also been massive publicity surrounding the series, although much of it has been the result of controversy, but all in all, the headlines have increased a lot of awareness and interest in the show. There’s a good chance we’ll see a lot more true crime content coming to Netflix and elsewhere in the future, regardless of the recent backlash.
