Do Revenge Star Austin Abrams on Change of Pace from Euphoria

Austin Abrams’ character Max Broussard in “Do Revenge” couldn’t be more different from his role in “Euphoria” as Ethan Lewis. And for a while, Abrams went back and forth between shooting the new Netflix film (now streaming) and Season 2 of Sam Levinson’s HBO drama.

“It was really fun to meet a very nice, gentle, considerate person here [an] cocky,” he said in an interview with TheWrap about his “Do Revenge” character. “It’s really charming, really attention-getting.”

Abrams stars alongside Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke in the young adult film directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film follows Dre Torres (Mendes), the fallen ‘It’ girl, and Eleanor Leveton (Maya Hawke), the new girl at school, as they pair up to kill each other’s enemies, hence the title “Do Revenge”. Abrams plays Dre’s ex-boyfriend who leaks a steamy video only for his eyes.

“We definitely had a lot of conversations about the character. We had a lot of conversations about inspiration, which is an amalgamation of a lot of people who are in pop culture right now,” Abrams said. “It was a lot about what he wants and egos and things like that. It was his relationships and what he really wants and what he really felt towards Dre and what he really got from everyone. trying to do. He was personally a North Star.”

Set in a prestigious high school that feeds many of its students at prestigious Ivy League colleges, “Do Revenge” addresses the many themes, themes, and (sometimes unfortunate) rights of passage that occur at that age.

“It shows how hard it is to be in high school, how hard you are still trying to find and find yourself – at least for me, I remember I really didn’t know how I wanted to live.” And you’re still kinda kind enough to live for other people,” Abrams said. “And gosh, really definitely craving other people’s validation. I remember that. And I think you really see it in the characters. It’s really like being liked and loved and felt accepted wants.”

It becomes challenging to determine who is the good guy and who is the villain in “Do Revenge,” thanks to a few twists and turns between a group of young students played by Jonathan Davis, Alisha Bo, Talia Ryder, Paris Berelc. , Abrams, Mendes and Hawk in addition to Ava Capri, Rish Shah and Maia Refico.

Abrams said, “There are parts of Max that I think we can all relate to, everyone wanting to like us and trying to feel good all the time through validation.” “or because [Max]Is organizing or he’s the head of all these clubs and things like that. It was really exploring its parts of the ego and letting it run around a little bit more, paying more attention to them and turning them around a little bit more. Caring really deeply about how you looked and felt and things like that.

“Do Revenge” has been marketed as a twist on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “Strangers on a Train”, set only in high school and modernized. Without spoiling anything, Abrams agreed that some characters in “Do Revenge” behave like “Strangers on a Train.”

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s so glamorous, but there’s a strong price that everyone has to pay for what they’re doing,” he said.

Although “Euphoria” could be described similarly, Abrams feels that “Do Revenge” has a different style.

“This movie is a lot more glamorous. It’s just a more glamorous scene from high school, but maybe ‘Euphoria’ is glamorous in a different way,” he said. “Although there are very real aspects to it, there is a slightly elevated aspect. [“Do Revenge”] There is a lot of poppy seeds, very different colors. Lots of likes, larger than life characters.”

‘Do Revenge’ is now streaming on Netflix.
