Emmys: ‘White Lotus’ limited series, season 2 competes as drama

The White Lotus‘ the next destination is… the incredibly competitive drama series race at this year’s Emmys.

The Television Academy has ruled that the HBO comedy-drama must now exit the limited series run, due to the ongoing arc involving Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya.

Following the decision of the Television Academy, our sister site Variety reports, The White Lotus chose to have Season 2 compete as a drama.

As decided by the Television Academy in December 2021, a limited series must really be limited, meaning that “the story arc must be completely resolved within its season, with no ongoing storyline and/or or main characters in subsequent seasons”.

The Emmys began policing the limited series game on a case-by-case basis in 2019, when they decided that FX american horror story, after seven seasons of sometimes-hanging threads and recurring characters, had to transition into the drama series run. Likewise, HBO big little lies went from limited (when he really thought it was a one-season show) to drama after talking about a second season.

This year’s drama series races at the Emmys promise to be especially brutal, with The White Lotus Season 2 is now competing against the likes of Succession Season 4, The crown Season 5, The Mandalorian Season 3, yellow jackets Season 2, Andor, The last of us, Dragon House and the back half of You better call Saulis the farewell race.
