Every major villain in the franchise, ranked

Before Harry ever started at Hogwarts, he’d already been in a room with some of the biggest villains of his life. Voldemort’s failed attempt to kill Harry as a baby left him trapped with the Dursleys throughout his childhood. The Dursleys are presented as horrible people from the start. But they’re not the only problems Harry faces in the world. When Harry finally escapes his childhood home, he faces several new adversaries alone. From professors trying to kill him to others with a vendetta against Harry for who his parents were, Hogwarts isn’t the safe haven Harry hoped it would be.

But while some villains in the Harry Potter universe are actively dangerous in their actions and words, others are little more than playground bullies. Antagonists make their mark in a variety of ways, from those who specifically want to kill Harry to others who seem to enjoy torturing the entire student body. At the same time, all Death Eaters are villains, but some stand out as a much bigger threat given their direct connection to Harry and his friends. While some may switch sides, others remain pure evil from start to finish.

10 The Dursleys

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Vernon and Petunia
Warner Brothers paints Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Cruel and mean to Harry, the Dursley family are the first truly horrible people Harry ever gets to know. Vernon and Petunia insult Harry by making him sleep under the stairs, giving him too big hand-me-downs, forcing him to do all the chores, and completely neglecting him. Dudley isn’t much better, but most of his terrible tendencies are usually a mix of running after his parents and being a kid. Just before Harry leaves to find Horcruxes, Petunia barely shows a sense of grief for her long-dead sister, and Dudley’s statement that he doesn’t see Harry as a waste of space suggests he had some development while growing up.

9 Professor Quirrell

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Professor Quirrell
Warner Brothers paints Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

As the first magical adversary Harry faces in his first year at Hogwarts, Harry does not realize he is the real culprit as most of the attention is on Professor Snape. When the revelation emerges that Professor Quirrell is the film’s actual villain, who has secretly mounted Voldemort on the back of his head, it’s a huge surprise. Admittedly, not much is explained about Quirrell except that Voldemort’s claims to power had reached him. However, Quirrell doesn’t last long in the franchise; introduced and killed off in the first episode of the series.

8 Gilderoy Lockhart

Smallheart (1)
Warner Bros. Pictures

Unlike most of the franchise’s villains, Gilderoy has nothing to do with Voldemort. Instead, the only real threat Gilderoy poses is his arrogance and idiocy. He’s a professor who knows nothing about his class, and every class he teaches is meant to hype his ego. Even everything Gilderoy claims to have done is fake, as he later revealed that he erased everyone’s memories and took credit for everything. The worst thing Gilderoy does to the students is feed them false academic information and try to erase Harry and Ron’s memories, which ultimately backfires.

7 Draco Malfoy

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy
Warner Bros. Pictures

While Draco may have thought he would do anything to see Voldemort rise to power, thinking about it and participating are two very different things. Draco is mostly just talking and childishly bullying most of the time Harry Potter. Still, the second Draco is given considerable responsibility to work for Voldemort; suddenly things take a drastic turn for him. It’s not necessarily a redemption arc, but an awareness of what he’s gotten himself into. Draco is only about seventeen when he is asked to kill Dumbledore and allow Death Eaters to enter Hogwarts. Draco’s uncertainty about how far he is willing to go continues when the Snatchers bring in Harry, Ron and Hermione and Draco is hesitant to identify Harry.

While Draco is undoubtedly a villain of the series, has horrible beliefs, and bullies Harry, Ron, and Hermione countless times, he seems more comfortable with name-calling than taking a life.

6 Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew
Warner Bros. Pictures

If it weren’t for Peter Pettigrew, Harry’s life could have turned out very differently. But as it stands, Pettigrew single-handedly ruined Harry’s life because he was a coward. Furthermore, it is never suggested that Voldemort’s beliefs were Pettigrew’s when he was a child, because why would he have been friends with James, Sirius, and Remus if that was the case? However, Pettigrew admitted that he joined Voldemort out of fear and perhaps a desire for power. But while Pettigrew is responsible for giving away James and Lily’s location and directing Voldemort’s resurrection spell, he portrays no excitement for evil.

5 Severus Snape

Professor Snape in Harry Potter
Warner Bros.

Although Snape was a double agent working on Dumbledore’s side, Snape’s actions and motivations cannot be ignored. As a teenager, Snape invented dark spells and seemed to share Voldemort’s beliefs about muggles and muggle-borns. Snape was not an innocent victim of the Marauders’ bullying. Snape was also dangerous and somehow viewed Lily as separate from other Muggle-borns. He then resented that Lily never fell in love with him while she grew to love James, and that Snape’s hatred of James continued to grow.

As an adult, instead of wanting to save the entire Potter family, including the innocent baby, Snape was only interested in Lily surviving Voldemort’s attack. He was fine with James and Harry dying. Although Snape agreed to protect Harry as best he could, he still enjoyed teasing him and Neville pointlessly during their years at Hogwarts.

4 Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Wall
Warner Bros. Pictures

Lucius is a devoted Death Eater for most of the series. He fully follows the beliefs of pureblood supremacy and likes to taunt Arthur Weasley for financial differences and status in the Ministry. Lucius has Malfoy turn Manor into Voldemort’s headquarters, and this also shows how low on the totem pole Voldemort can see him.

Voldemort does not see Lucius as someone worth keeping his wand as Voldemort takes it from him to try and kill Harry. Lucius’ evil actions extend beyond those of other wizards as he abuses his house-elf, Dobby, until Harry finds a way to save him and sneaks Tom Riddle’s diary to Ginny. When Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco leave the battle and seemingly switch sides, it seems to be more of a place to know who will be the real loser.

3 Bellatrix of the Stranger

Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange
Warner Bros. Pictures

Bellatrix doesn’t get any real screen time until she escapes Azkaban, which is one of the ways the public learns how dangerous she is. It turns out that Bellatrix has more bad blood with Neville’s family than Harry’s. Bellatrix had tortured Neville’s parents to madness around the time Harry’s parents were killed. Still, she’s arguably the most loyal Death Eater of the group. She enjoys torturing Hermione for information and takes insane pleasure in teasing her wish to kill Ginny. Bellatrix’s death is one of the biggest payoffs in the series.

2 Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort - Harry Potter Franchise (2001-2011)
Warner Bros. Pictures

As the franchise’s biggest villain, Voldemort has the biggest backstory and an important role as an antagonist. He barely appears in most episodes, except maybe the finale. Many of Voldemort’s plots against Harry fail, leading him to attempt to conquer the wizarding world and defeat a teenage boy at the same time. One of the main things that worked on Voldemort is that he doesn’t need to be physically present for others to fear him. His name and knowledge of what he can be more than enough to speak for him. Voldemort kills without remorse and enjoys torture. However, his eventual defeat is still one of the most memorable wins in the franchise.

1 Dolores Umber

Dolores Umber
Warner Bros. Pictures

While she’s not the series’ central villain, Dolores Umbridge is arguably the worst person Harry Potter ever introduced. Outside the gate, her bright pink attire juxtaposes her dark heart and nature. Umbridge’s arrival at Hogwarts is about taking control and keeping an eye on Dumbledore and Harry. But she goes to great lengths to make ridiculous rules that take all the fun out of school. But not only is she a bad professor or principal in the academic sense, she also draws magic out of the lessons. She also tortures students and takes joy in it.

Umbridge provides detentions where students are forced to write with blood pens that leave permanent scars on their hands. Umbridge is willing to torture the students. The moment Umbridge is dragged away by centaurs is one of the brightest moments in which her character can be seen.
