EXCLUSIVE: Composers Salim-Sulaiman reveal the connection between the soundtrack of the movie Dor and Chak De! India

Over the years, music composers Salim-Sulaiman have managed to become one of the most respected names in Hindi film music. From Chak De! India, fashion until Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat and much more, the Merchant brothers have come a long way in making great hit music albums for countless Bollywood movies; for over decades now.

In an exclusive music room interview with Bollywood Hungamawhile sharing the interesting behind-the-scenes stories of how they created their chart-buster scores, the musical duo also revealed the connection between the film’s soundtrack Arid and Chak De! India. During the conversation, Salim revealed what the number was like “Maula Mere” from Chak De! India was made just a week before the film’s release.

Salim recalled, “When we saw the whole movie after it ended, there was a scene towards the end where Shah Rukh Khan looks at the Tiranga and tears roll down his eyes, that was a very important part…so in that part there was a very good background score, but Yash [Chopra] ji said, ‘There should be a song here.’”

He continued: “The movie was only a week away from release, so that day itself we watched the movie and came back to our music studio, and we had a song that we made for another movie. Arid which was Ek Taraf Teri Dhadkan Thi. Saansein Hai Teri Dooji Orr, Maula Mere Toote Na Ye Dor. But Nagesh [Kukunoor, director of Dor] didn’t like this song, he said it was too sad. He wanted a positive number.”

“So we did”Ye Hausla Kaise Ye Hausala Kaise Jhuke, Ye Arazu Kaise Ruke.’” Salim narrated while singing the song. “He loved this song. It has something. This is written by Mir Ali Husain, Yeh Sir Hausalon Se Kaise Jhuke, Ye Dil Arazu.. [Nagesh told us to] Remove Sir and Dil, let’s keep ‘Ye Hausla Kaise Ye Hausala Kaise Jhuke, Ye Arazu Kaise Ruke’. So this is the process of creating a song.”
