Singer-actor Gippy Grewal is now candid about the controversy surrounding it ‘The Punjaabban Song’ in Jugjugg Jeeyo starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. The song, originally called ‘Nach Punjaban’, was sung by Abrar Ul Haq who claimed he had not given any rights to Dharma Productions. Meanwhile, Gippy Grewal claims he was told by music composer Tanishk Bagchi that his vocals were not used at all, only for the singer to find out the entire trailer was clipped around his vocals.

In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood HungamaGippy Grewal said he was outstretched to the track’The Punjaabban song’ which was widely used in Jugjugg Jeeyo and also during promotions. He said he will listen to the music and record it and forward it. “They sent me saying ‘You sing this song!’ They said, ‘Sir, will you sing this song,’Nach Punjaban’?’ I said, ‘I’ll listen to it and if my singing fits, I’ll sing it!’ So I heard the song, recorded it and sent it to them. For three months no one called me. So I assumed no one liked my singing and they weren’t using it. One day I saw the poster that said the trailer is out tomorrow. So I messaged their music director Tanishk Bagchi when his vocals were used, and he said, ‘No, it was Dharma’s call’. I said, ‘That’s good! No problem and good luck. Next time we’ll do something. The next day the trailer came out and I didn’t watch it because I didn’t think my number was in it so I wasn’t interested. My brother called me from Australia and said, ‘You sang well, didn’t you tell me?’ And I thought, ‘Where did you hear my song?’ He said your vocals are in the trailer. So when I looked up the trailer, the whole trailer was cut around my vocals.”
Gippy Grewal was quite surprised that the music director was not aware of it and that the singer was not aware of it either. He then messaged Tanishk to tell the makers not to use his vocals because he didn’t feel like doing the song anymore. “They had clearly used it, and they called me and tried to explain it. Their entire promotion was based on the song, no one said who sang it. I don’t know what competition they had.”
Gippy Grewal went on to say he felt even more uncomfortable after vocalist Abrar Ul Haq, who sang the original song, tweeted that he had not given the rights to the song to Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. His tweet read: “I have not sold my song “Nach Punjaban” to an Indian film and I reserve the right to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar are not allowed to use copy numbers. This is my 6th song that will be copied and that will not be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.”
Upon seeing the tweet, Gippy thought, “I was stuck. I realized this is Abrar’s song, and they’ve claimed his rights — and I grew up listening to him, and I have a lot of respect for him. And I hadn’t signed an agreement, and I got a nice phone call from Azeemji in Dharma Productions, so I signed. He told me about the check and I explained it’s not about the money, and please don’t do this. If I should have done it for money I should have said before sending my vocals. But please don’t do these things. I don’t understand these things…’
