EXCLUSIVE: Ram Gopal Varma reveals exhibitors in B and C centres had changed the classy poster of his Ajay Devgn-starrer Company: “They also showed Ishaa Koppikar exposing her thighs” : Bollywood News

In May 2022, Farah Khan shared interesting information about her directorial debut in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Main Hoon Na (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan. She said: “Several posters were made for B and C centers in which Shah Rukh held a gun in his hand, and Suniel Shetty was also featured! In Mumbai, the posters gave the impression that it was a fun, musical entertainer. ”

EXCLUSIVE: Ram Gopal Varma reveals that exhibitors in B and C centers had changed the stylish poster of his Ajay Devgn starrer Company: “They also showed Ishaa Koppikar bare her thighs”

However, there have been times when the distributors or exhibitors refused to put up the posters provided by the creators. Instead, they’ve taken commercially appealing photos or snapshots of older movies and made them look like the poster of the actor’s latest movie. The idea behind it is to attract moviegoers, let alone result in cheating.

In fact, Ajay Devgn got into trouble when a resident of Ajmer went to court and asked for Rs. 4.50 lakhs. According to the complainant, a local movie theater playing his 2019 rom-com was The De Pyaar De, had put up a poster of Ajay doing a stunt. But the said scene was not there in the film. However, Ajay was released in this case because his legal team made it clear that he cannot be held responsible for publicity and promotional materials. The bank said an actor has nothing to do with billboards, posters or deciding which parts to remove.

During his exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Ram Gopal Varma said that his film Company (2002), which also starred Ajay Devgn, also had such custom posters made. He said: “I had designed a stylish poster of my movie Company, with Ajay Devgn and Vivek Oberoi. When it came out, no one in the north put up that poster. They made a new poster that features Ajay Devgn from another movie holding a gun. They also showed Ishaa Koppikar exposing her thighs. I’d never put that on any of my posters! They picked it from somewhere.”

RGV added: “I think they’re right about that, though, because they’re targeting an audience they know. That poster would definitely appeal to the guy who frequents single screen movie theaters in Patna. So there is a logic to it.”

Ram Gopal Varma noted that our film personalities are often unaware of the reality of the country and what works in A-class centers may not appeal to the general public. To prove his point, he shared an interesting anecdote: “When Dolby and DTS came to India, the company’s officials flew down from London to teach filmmakers how to handle it. They had strict standards for how much volume you for the sound, what decibels of sound should go into the left and right speakers, etc.

RGV continued: “This was a time when Mr Subhash Ghai was on the job” trimurti (1996). The tendency then was to play everything on high sound. However, these Dolby officials said, ‘No, no, you can’t do that. Turn the volume down.” Subhash Ghai had had enough of their dictates. They were at Prasad Labs, Chennai. He took them out of the studio on the street and asked, ‘Have you heard such traffic noise in your country? People use the horn in their car all the time and they yell and talk. You can’t align what your audience wants and our audience.”

That’s not all. Ram Gopal Varma revealed: “Later, he took them to a Rajinikanth movie, which was released at the same time. In the theater, for the first 30 minutes, no one could hear anything except people shouting and cheering! He asked them, ‘How do you process your idea of noise level in such an environment? You are serving an audience watching movies in silence. Here is an audience whose decibel level is much higher than the decibel level coming out of the speakers’!”
