Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is one of the most anticipated movies directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon starring simbu in the lead. Starring Siddi Idhnani as the lead actress, the film will also be released in Telugu as ‘The Life of Muthu’. Funded by K. Ganesh under the banner of Wales Film International, the film is widely made. This movie is released in Telugu by the famous production company Sri Sravani Movies. While the Tamil version hits the screens today, the Telugu version titled ‘The Life of Muthu’ will be released on September 17. Prior to the film’s release, director Gautham Menon gave an interesting interview about the film and here it is.
What is the story of ‘The Life of Muthu’…? The teaser and trailer are very different from the movies you and Simbu have made before!
We’ve both made romantic movies before. Compared to those movies, this is a very different movie. This is a gangster movie. Muthu lives in a small village. He’s going to Mumbai for some reason. Later, the plot revolves around how Muthu gets into the dark world and what happened next?. There is a dark side to Muthu’s life. There is also love, romance and action. What he did to get out of that world is the crux.
What inspired you to make this film?
Initially I wanted to do a love story with Simbu. Rahman sir composed a song which was also based on a love story. But when there was still a month left for the shooting of the film, I met Jayamohan, a famous writer in Tamil, for another film. He told a short story of 15 minutes. I asked him what’s next. He said he had only written up to there. Later, in ten days, he gave me a 100-page script. As I read, the images flashed before my eyes. Then I wanted to make this gangster movie by keeping the love story separate.
Why did you choose Simbu for this role and why make movies with him over and over again?
He’s a great actor. He turns on ten seconds before the ‘action’ and ten seconds after you say ‘cut’ he is out of his character. He is very dedicated, disciplined and a great actor to work with. He continues to surprise me with his work every time. It’s a great experience to work with someone like him.
It has been announced that ‘The Life of Muthu’ is getting a sequel. Was this decision made during the script work itself? Or is it just for the publicity?
It’s not a publicity gimmick. When Jayamohan told the story, I thought no movie could be made of it. When I discussed it with him, I wanted to do it in two parts. Also don’t compare my movie with ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Ponniyan Selvan’. They are huge movies. There are larger images. Due to the demand for this story, we are making it in two parts. Even after the film’s completion, my hero and producer asked to start part 2 as soon as possible.
Sravanti Ravikishore presents this movie in Telugu. Can you tell us about your work experience with him?
Even when we don’t work with some people, we admire them. Even though they are small meetings, it feels nice to meet some people. ‘Sravanti’ Ravikishor is such a person. I shot a movie with hero Ram for a few days. But the project did not succeed. Then we did it with Nani. Anyway, Ram is the reason why I contacted Ravi Kishore sir. He is like a bridge between us. Recently Ram and I met again. We discussed a movie. It is produced by Ravikshore. I am also happy that he is releasing my film ‘The Life of Muthu’ in Telugu.
