The long-awaited Shamshera has been sadly bombed at the box office. The debacle also casts a shadow on its protagonist, Ranbir Kapoor. His last movie Sanjuc (2018) was a Rs. 300 crores blockbuster and it increased its stardom. However, out of his 8 films, 6 were flops – Besharam (2013), Roy (2015), Bombay Velvet (2015), tamasha (2015), Jagga Jasoos (2017) and shamshera. Nothing but Sanjuc and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) were successful.

To this, trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “You’re famous on your last Friday. And shamshera didn’t even open properly. So his reputation has been dented. However, he is a big star. People love his acting. He has also been very uncontroversial.”
He continued: “I hope… Brahmastra is the one (to get him back into the big league). Let’s hope like no one has seen it Brahmastra and therefore it will be too difficult to pass judgment on it. But I’m sure it takes a good opening. His lineup is generally impressive. He works with young directors bursting with new ideas – Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Luv Ranjan.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan said: “If you don’t deliver for that long, your positioning will be affected. His counterpart, Kartik Aaryan, meanwhile, got cases worth Rs. 180 crores with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.”
Way ahead for Ranbir Kapoor
When asked what Ranbir should do now to bounce back, Atul Mohan replied: “He should have introspection about the kind of movies he is making. There is no doubt that he is good looking and very talented. He has superstar material. He can dance and act well. Somehow he should get out of his comfort zone and work with more people instead of sticking to working with a few directors I think he realizes that and collaborates with filmmakers like Luv Ranjan and Sandeep Reddy Vanga.” He also said, “He shouldn’t experiment anymore. He should focus more on commercial cinema.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, commented: “Ranbir Kapoor is a young movie star in the making. He has a huge following. However, it fits more in youthful, urban films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Wake up Sid (2009) or even Brahmastra for that matter. He has charisma and he holds Shamshera on his shoulders. But he’s too handsome and probably someone like Vicky Kaushal with its rugged look, the part would have been more appropriate.”
He also said: “Ranbir looks too good on screen. Even Hrithik Roshan was confronted with it in Super 30 (2019). He came out with flying colors and the advantage was that the budget was right. When the budget was sky high like it was in War, the creators focused more on its mass appeal and didn’t experiment. I understand that these actors get tired and want to try new things. And actors need to experiment, but not on the scale and budget of shamshera.”
He continued: “He’ll probably have to think two or three times before he winks at a movie. Lucky for him, Brahmastra stands in front. Also, two other movies (Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal and the unnamed following of Luv Ranjan) are in his zone.
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi said: “Ranbir has not made as many films as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, who have consolidated their stardom for nearly three decades. So he’s still somewhere in the middle when it comes to his superstar’s establishment. He should be focused on the kind of content he works on and the kind of filmmakers he works with. He has to make sure that he targets the widest possible audience and earns their love and money. While a few of his movies haven’t quite performed as we all wanted, none the less he’s one of the most talented, charming actors we have in this generation. He is also someone who I believe has a phenomenal work ethic. He can play any type of role. Whether it’s a dacoit in shamshera or a cheesy loverboy in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil or play the character in Yeh Jawaani Hai DeewaniHe does all that with equal ease. No one can take his talent away from him. It’s only a matter of time before a filmmaker comes and exploits in a way that makes his films make the kind of money that no other actor in his generation can imagine based on his own fame.”
