Henry Cavill explains why using John Williams’ score was essential to his return to Superman

Henry Cavill’s return as Superman was accompanied by an iconic John Williams score, and the actor says there was a very simple reason for it.

All the mystery around Henry CavillSuperman’s return is now set and the actor has spoken openly about his cameo appearance in Black Adam and what it means for the future. One aspect of his new cape appearance has raised more questions than many, and that’s the decision to use John Williams‘ Superman score instead of Hans Zimmer’s to direct the Man of Steel back to the DCU. Cavill has his own ideas about why it was right to use the classical score in Black Adam’s scene after the credits.

Henry Cavill last officially played Superman in 2017 Justice League, in which the character returned from the dead to save the world. Now, five long years later, Superman’s future as an integral part of the DCU is once again guaranteed as he will spar with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in multiple future films. While it was enough for many to see the two powerhouses of the DC world, the scene got an extra nostalgic boost with the addition of John Williams’ classic Superman score. While speaking with CinemaBlendnoted Cavill:

“John Williams’ theme song is obviously incredibly important to the character. It’s something that resonates with the character and everything. I think everyone in the world hears that, I think a lot of the world that hears that will immediately recognize it as Superman and have a certain feeling about it, and I think it’s great.”

How much does Henry Cavill’s return mean to the DCU?

Clearly the former DCEU has been struggling for some time to find a solid footing, with no real direction or coherence. With the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, and a pivotal storyline featuring the incoming confrontation of Black Adam and Superman, the DCU could be about to find its way. Amid so many changes, the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman seems to be the biggest constant for the franchise, especially with others like Ben Affleck’s Batman reportedly dropping out of the franchise next year. Cavill is certainly happy with the way things are going, as he recently said about his Black Adam appearance:

“It was a really powerful moment for me. I wasn’t too sure what it would feel like, if it would be ‘cool, back in the suit’; or if it would become something very emotionally connected because I was the Man or Steel suit again. I chose that mainly because of the nostalgia that came with the suit, and it was incredibly important for me to just stand and enjoy that moment. Yeah, that’s one of the pinnacle moments of my career. It feels great to be able to wear it again.”

While Black Adam’s box office may not have been as epic as the movie itself, this is clearly the start of a new direction for Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Universe and many executives will hope it has a long successful run ahead of it this time around.
