Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels of the same name, the first season of Are dark materials began in November 2019 and the second season aired in November 2020. Produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Productions for BBC One and HBO, Are dark materials drops the audience into a multi-world reality and begins in an alternate world where the souls of all humans manifest as animal companions called daemons.
The series revolves around an orphan named Lyra, played by Logan star Dafne Keen, who goes in search of her missing boyfriend. She soon discovers a kidnapping plot and a dangerous secret involving the rebellious Lord Asriel and the authoritarian Marisa Coulter, and discovers that she is the subject of a witch prophecy that she will change the world.
All of these mysteries are linked to an invisible cosmic substance called Dust, with Lyra embarking on an adventure that puts her on a collision course with our world and a teenager named Will, who is himself haunted by figures associated with his missing father.
